Before I got seriously into style essences, I’d heard that Romantic Natural Ingenues (RNIs) might be one of the most common types.

But after years of carefully analyzing celebrities, I now think RNIs may be one of the least common three essence blends.

Let’s explore this amazing beauty type, their best fashion, and the puzzle of why Romantic Natural Ingenues seem so rare.

Romantics exude glamour and sensuality. And yet since Romantic beauty is so passionate and emotionally charged, people with a lot of Romantic may worry that they come off as intense or even intimidating.
Ingenues have feminine and flirty beauty. And yet people with a lot of Ingenue may sometimes worry that their soft, youthful faces prevent them from being taken seriously.
Naturals project friendliness and confidence. And yet Naturals wear the most casual and practical fashion of all the types, which can feel like a letdown if you love glam or ultra-feminine aesthetics.

Importantly, it’s not a bad thing to have any of these qualities: to appear very intense, very gentle, or very strong.

But for people who would prefer to look friendlier, more assertive, or softer, RNIs have some solutions:

Romantic’s intimidating side feels friendlier thanks to Natural and Ingenue.
Ingenue’s youthful side feels more grown-up and assertive when paired with strong Natural features.
And Natural beauty feels softer when matched with “yin” essences.

Romantic Natural Ingenue Siblings

In many ways, style analysis is about detecting patterns.

One such pattern: siblings sometimes inherit the same style type but with different essence amounts.

An example is Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice. They’re siblings, and they’re both RNI.

But the sweet, rounded Ingenue essence is more obvious in Beatrice’s face:

And the strong, sturdy Natural essence is more obvious in Eugenie’s face:

And I think that’s very cool, because together, these two siblings help us more easily understand both of their style types.

The Ingenue elements in Beatrice’s face may be evident for many people, given her very round eyes and very short, rounded nose. But her Natural elements can be easier to miss.

And the Natural elements in Eugenie’s face may be easy to see for many people, especially in her strong, broad jawline. But her sweet Ingenue qualities can be harder to perceive.

And I don’t think this is an isolated case of siblings inheriting the same style type but with different ratios.

For instance, we see a similar phenomenon with the Deschanel sisters.

Specifically, both sisters are Natural Classic Ingenue, but the round, sweet Ingenue shapes are more obvious in Zooey’s face, and the strong, sturdy Natural shapes are more obvious in Emily’s face:

This phenomenon makes a lot of sense when we consider that style essences typically seem to be inherited from our biological parents, and that often our parents won’t have the same dominant essence.

So what may frequently happen is that the sibling who takes more after mom’s style type will inherent mom’s dominant essence, whereas the sibling who takes more after dad’s style type will have dad’s dominant essence.

So cool!

Romantic Natural Ingenue Fashion

RNI faces may be rare, but RNI fashion is pretty easy to find in the mainstream. You can explore styles like:

Glam cottage core

Or simply pair relaxed-fit or wide-leg Natural jeans with Romantic Ingenue blouses for an effortless RNI look.

Why are Romantic Natural Ingenues Rare?

RNIs have versatile, widely-appealing beauty: they’re strong and soft, sweet and sensual, carefree and glam.

So why do they seem so rare among celebrities?

I strongly suspect that Romantic Natural Ingenues are rare among famous people simply because they’re also rare in the general population.

Here’s my theory on why this is the case:

Different Face Shapes and Features

My theory is that key Romantic and Ingenue facial features tend to be opposite to key Natural facial features.

And this opposition makes it less likely for purely Romantic Natural, Ingenue Natural, and Romantic Natural Ingenue faces to exist.

Here’s a summary of key facial qualities of these essences.

Overall straight shapes (Natural) vs. overall curvy shapes (Romantic and Ingenue)

Long noses and chins (Natural) vs. short noses and chins (Romantic and Ingenue)
Horizontally elongated eyes and lips, without much vertical elongation of those features (Natural) vs. vertically elongated eyes and lips, without much horizontal elongation of those features (Romantic and Ingenue)

Wide chins, jawlines, and overall face shapes (Natural) vs. narrower chins, jawlines, and overall face shapes (Romantic and Ingenue)

In summary, key individual features of the Natural essence are quite different (and arguably opposite) from Romantic’s and Ingenue’s.

Why is this significant? Because from doing Makeup Analyses and analyzing people’s individual facial features, I’ve realized that people often have more than one essence per facial feature.

Meaning, people’s eyes are often not purely Romantic, or purely Natural, or purely any essence. Though sometimes they are.

But what’s more common is for people’s individual facial features to blend two or more essences, such as to have Romantic Ingenue eyes or Ethereal Natural lips or a Dramatic Classic nose.

Why is this relevant? Because if it’s true that in many ways, Romantic/Ingenue features are opposite to Natural ones, then this seems to make it less likely that a single facial feature will have both Romantic and Natural, or both Natural and Ingenue.

Because you can’t easily have a nose that’s simultaneously long (Natural) and short (Ingenue), or a chin that’s simultaneously wide (Natural) and narrow (Ingenue).

In other words, it may sometimes be impossible for key Natural and Romantic/Ingenue facial qualities to simultaneously coexist in the same facial feature, because the qualities are opposites.

But that doesn’t mean that these essences can’t coexist in the same face. They absolutely can, as we see with Romantic Natural Ingenue celebrities:

RNI Sofia Coppola illustrates that it is possible to have significant Romantic, Natural, and Ingenue.

Interestingly, while Natural is her second essence, her face doesn’t appear to have a high amount of the wide shapes that stereotypically define Natural beauty.
Where she does appear to have obvious width is in her cheekbones. And they taper into a jawline that appears quite narrow (Romantic or Ingenue) by comparison.
So perhaps this unique and beautiful combination of (very) wide cheekbones with a (very) narrow jawline is part of what enables Sofia Coppola to combine Romantic, Natural, and Ingenue.

So it’s absolutely possible to be an RNI.

But compared to many of the other blends, it seems less likely that a face will have only these three essences.

And this is partly because these essences have opposite qualities that can’t always coexist in the same facial feature.

What about coexistence in neighboring facial features?

One counterargument might be, “Fine, so a single facial feature might be unlikely to be purely Romantic Natural, or purely Natural Ingenue. But couldn’t a person have, say, Romantic Ingenue lips and a Natural jaw, or Romantic Ingenue lips and a Natural nose?”

Yes, definitely. There are faces that combine Romantic or Ingenue features with Natural ones. Again, Romantic Natural Ingenues are proof of this:

This is Romantic Natural Ingenue Princess Eugenie. (I think this image looks kind of photoshopped, but apparently it is a real picture of her on a ski trip!)

Here we can see that Eugenie’s broad, blunt-edged jawline likely has a lot of Natural and that her lips likely have a lot of Ingenue or Romantic (since her lips appear rather plump and her mouth appears rather narrow in horizontal space).

So it’s definitely possible for a face to only have Romantic, Natural, and Ingenue.

But I still think we would expect the Romantic Natural Ingenue type to be less common than many other essence blends.

Why? Because it seems true that adjacent features, like the lips and chin, often have at least some similarity in their qualities, such as being relatively narrow or wide.

I would wager that the size and position of the teeth, for instance, has a big impact both on how wide a person’s mouth appears and on how wide the bone structure of the chin and jawline are.

So, often a horizontally narrow mouth (Romantic or Ingenue) will be accompanied by a horizontally narrow jaw (Romantic or Ingenue) rather than a structurally wide jaw (Natural).

This is presumably true of other facial features, too: often, though certainly not always, there is at least some relationship between adjacent facial features.

And this makes it less likely for opposite features (e.g., Romantic/Ingenue and Natural features) to coexist in the same face.

And one counterargument to this is, “But there’s lots of faces that combine two or more of these essences! Some of the most famous faces, like Romantic Natural Gamines Britney Spears and Selena Gomez.”

That’s completely correct, and it leads us to the concept of:

Transition Essences

So far, we’ve explained why it may be rare for a face to have only some combination of Romantic, Natural, and Ingenue.

But someone could rightly point out that having a three essence blend that contains both Romantic and Natural, or both Ingenue and Natural, isn’t rare at all.

There’s many, many people who have a blend like:

Romantic Natural Gamine
Natural Ingenue Gamine
Romantic Natural Dramatic
Natural Ingenue Dramatic
Romantic Natural Ethereal
Ingenue Natural Classic
And many more.

That’s all true. So the key seems to be this:

For Romantic and Natural, or Ingenue and Natural, to be in the same face, what most frequently happens is that there’s a third essence also in that face—some amount of Dramatic, Gamine, Ethereal, or Classic.

And this is perhaps because that third essence has qualities that bridge the gap between Romantic and Natural (or between Ingenue and Natural).

For example, Gamines tends to have shortened bone structure, a quality Ingenues and Romantics often possess, too. But Gamines also have straight (and sometimes blunt and wide-appearing) shapes that are similar to Naturals’. Gamine can have qualities of all three essences. So it’s easy for Ingenue and Gamine to coexist in the same face, and for Gamine and Natural to coexist in the same face. And thus it’s easy for all three of these essences to coexist in the same Natural Gamine Ingenue face.

For similar reasons, it’s also easy for Romantic, Gamine, and Natural to simultaneously exist in the same face.

For the Dramatic essence, Dramatic is long and straight, like Natural. But Dramatic bone structure tends to be convergent and narrow, especially at the jaw and chin, which is similar to what we see in Romantic and Ingenue faces. So it’s easy for Romantic and Dramatic to coexist in the same face, and for Dramatic and Natural to coexist in the same face. And this also means that it’s easy for Romantic, Dramatic, and Natural to all coexist in the same face.

And for similar reasons, it’s also easy for Ingenue, Dramatic, and Natural to all exist in the same face.

Again: I’m not saying that it’s impossible for Romantic, Natural, and Ingenue to be present in the same face without any other essences.

In fact, I’m saying that this does sometimes happen, and that Romantic Natural Ingenue celebrities are proof.

What I am saying is that it makes sense that the coexistence of these three essences is rarer than many other type combinations.

What about the Ethereal Natural Type?

Interestingly, while I’ve yet to identify a pure Romantic Natural or pure Natural Ingenue, I’ve identified many pure Ethereal Naturals.

A possible reason for this emerges when we consider that:

Natural and Ingenue/Romantic faces tend to have opposite qualities, as described above.
In many ways, Ethereal does not have qualities opposite to Natural.

For instance, Natural faces often have long noses, chins, and overall bone structure. In contrast, Romantic and Ingenue noses, chins, and overall bone structure frequently appear short.

But Ethereal noses and overall bone structure also tend to be vertically long. So, in this way, Ethereal actually has notable similarly to Natural.

Naturals also often have horizontal elongation of key features, like the eyes and lips—and Ethereals commonly have horizontal elongation of these features, too.

In contrast, Romantics and Ingenues don’t tend to have those qualities.

So in this way, Ethereal and Natural appear to have greater literal similarity to their facial features and facial structure than do Romantic and Natural (or Ingenue and Natural).

And this may explain why pure Ethereal Naturals don’t appear to be a rare type, whereas pure Romantic Naturals and pure Ingenue Naturals do appear rare.

Romantic and Ingenue Rarity Explained?

A while ago, I speculated that Natural might be the most common style essence, and that Romantic and Ingenue might be the rarest.

I didn’t say much as to why this would be true, because at the time, I really had no idea.

But now I have a better guess as to why.

If it’s true that Natural is the most common essence (which isn’t definitively true, although it is an observation I’ve seen others make, and it is an informal observation I’ve made), then it would make perfect sense that the least common essences would be the ones that are least likely to coexist in the same face as Natural.

That is, Romantic and Ingenue.

Conclusion to The Theory

In conclusion, this theory might be incorrect. I could be wrong about why Romantic Naturals, Romantic Ingenues, and Romantic Natural Ingenues seem relatively rare.

It’s also possible that these types are more common than I think, and that I’ve just yet to find many people with these blends.

With that said, if this theory is true, then it helps solve various mysteries regarding which essence blends and individual essences seem rarer vs. more common.

Rare Beauty

One method of making fashion interesting and aesthetically pleasing is to use‍ ‍juxtaposition: to pair opposite qualities in a single outfit, like a going-out top with jeans, or a flared, flirty dress with scuffed boots.

I think this is true of faces, too. Many people are attracted to faces that combine different, even opposite, qualities.

I do hope to soon find more Romantic Natural Ingenue celebrities. But even if they remain apparently rare, that does nothing to diminish their wonderful blend of sweet and strong, carefree and glam beauty.
