“Edgy Bohemian”
“Boho Model”
Ethereal Dramatic Naturals illustrate the beauty of curves, angles, bluntness, and elongation—and how elongated features can simultaneously read as otherworldly, modelesque, and down-to-earth.

Challenging Beauty Stereotypes
With their unique combination of traits, Ethereal Dramatic Naturals defy many style essence myths, like:
Myth: EDNs Aren’t Conventionally Sexy
Reality: many Ethereal Dramatic Naturals are smoldering supermodels, including Karolina Kurkova, Gisele Bündchen, and Yasmin Wijnaldum, all of who have modeled for Victoria’s Secret.
The combination of curving Ethereal with intense Dramatic sometimes mimics the intense, passionate feel of Romantic.
Thus, many EDNs exude strong conventional sex appeal.
And since runway models commonly possess elongated features, facial elongation seems to have increasingly become part of modern mainstream beauty standards.
And for people who prefer more down-to-earth looks, many EDNs have this covered, too, particularly those with a lot of Natural.
One example—EDN Lisa Kudrow. She has notably friendly, relaxed Natural, and a down-to-earth, girl-next-door quality.
But if you study her features, such as her straight narrow nose and wide-set eyes, she could easily fit in as an otherworldly character on a show like Game of Thrones, especially in a costume that emphasizes her Ethereal and Dramatic.
EDN Lisa Kudrow is often photographed with a big smile, and Naturals tend to be so harmonious with a warm, welcoming facial expression. (In fact, most photos I find of Lisa on Google seem to be with a wide smile, which is cool and unique—most celebrities seem to favor more neutral expressions.)
Friendly faces appear often approachable and attractive, illustrating the popular appeal of Natural beauty.
Myth: You Should Use a Short Haircut to Shorten a Long Face
Reality: more than almost any other style type, Ethereal Dramatic Naturals appear flattered by extra-long locks:
This is a great example of how beauty advice that recommends fighting against your natural features—like, “Use a shorter haircut to make a long face look shorter”—usually doesn’t work.
In reality, elongation is beautiful, and surrounding a long face with shortened elements can backfire, since shorter hair can easily feel disharmonious in comparison to the face’s elongated features.
As EDNs illustrate, long hair is often what best harmonizes with a long face’s inherent geometry.
As for texture, EDNs can choose between sleek, straight Dramatic styles, Ethereal mermaid waves, or beachy Natural layers. See more on finding your best hair.
Myth: Face Type Always Matches Body Type
Reality: many people with elongated essence blends are average or even short in stature.
And Haylie isn’t an isolated case: EDN Corinne Bailey Rae is 5’3’’, and EDN Lady Gaga is 5’1’’.
The complicating factor: of the EDNs I’ve found so far, most are taller than average—but again, not all.
This reflects that there often does seem to be some correlation between a person’s face and body, such as having elongated facial features paired with tall stature.
But critically, there’s many exceptions to this principle, including Haylie Duff and other petite EDNs.
There’s also plenty of cases where tall people lack all elongated essences. One fascinating example is actress Frankie Adams, who’s nearly 6 feet tall and an Ingenue Romantic Gamine.
Overall, Ethereal Dramatic Naturals might tend to be above-average in height, but there’s plenty of exceptions.
Myth: Facial Elongation is Always Obvious to the Naked Eye
Reality: Ethereal Dramatic Naturals don’t always appear, to the naked eye, to have elongated features.
Why not? One reason is that Natural seems to be characterized just as much (and maybe more so) by horizontal width than vertical elongation. So Natural faces don’t always appear vertically long.
Another reason is that if a face has a high amount of elongation, sometimes the individual facial features will appear typical-length in the context of that face, since they’re surrounded by features that are also elongated.
An analogy is that if you’re very tall, like say 6 feet, you’ll tend to look closer to average height if you’re surrounded by other people who are also very tall, rather than say, surrounded by people who are 4 feet.
The human eye perceives visual phenomena partly based on contrast between surrounding elements. So, if every feature on a face is elongated, then the individual facial features may actually appear typical-length in the context of that face, since they don’t stand out as being especially long relative to their context.
Myth: Kate Winslet is an Iconic Romantic
Kate Winslet exudes conventional sex appeal and has what many might call a Romantic body type. But based on my analysis, the curves of her features are subtly elongated and Ethereal, not Romantic:
The Ethereal and Romantic essences possess notable similarity: both have medium to large, curving shapes, and both can give faces a highly feminine quality.
The key difference: Ethereal feels gentler, Romantic more intensely passionate.
But as noted above, this can be complicated by the fact that Dramatic beauty also feels intense. So faces that combine notable amounts of curvy Ethereal with striking Dramatic (like Kate Winslet’s) can easily mimic the feel of passionate Romantic.
Another way that Ethereal and Romantic can sometimes be distinguished is by conceptualizing Ethereal as more unique and otherworldly, and Romantic as more conventional.
There is some truth to this— Ethereals do have mystical, supernatural-feeling beauty.
The complication with calling Ethereal beauty highly unique or “unconventional” is that so many highly Ethereal actresses and models seem to be viewed as having widely-appealing, conventionally attractive beauty.
So do Ethereals look unconventional? There’s some truth to that idea, but the full reality is more complex.
And ultimately, people’s essences are based on their most flattering styling, regardless of whether their faces fit the exact stereotypes of how the essences are “supposed” to look.
My point in detailing all this is to say 1. Ethereal Dramatic Naturals may commonly be mistaken for having Romantic, Kate Winslet being a prime example; and 2. Ethereal Dramatic Naturals often have a ton of conventional sex appeal.
Boho or Bombshell (or Both?): Dita Von Teese
Another example of an Ethereal Dramatic Natural who defies essence stereotypes is famous burlesque dancer Dita Von Teese.
Dita is known for her glam vintage aesthetic, often styled in essences like Romantic, Ingenue, and Classic. And while her personal style is fabulous, it’s not a complete match for her essences:
Dita’s often-curled hair is a clue that she doesn’t have significant Romantic or Ingenue, because when you crop a picture of her to obscure her curly hair, her face tends to look more harmonious not surrounded by circular shapes.
So Dita doesn’t have Romantic or Ingenue. But I do think she can exude strongly sensuous and sweet vibes.
And not just from her hair, fashion, and makeup, but from her features themselves. As noted above, the intensity of Dramatic combined with the curving shapes of Ethereal can mimic the deeply passionate, curving Romantic essence.
And while Romantic and Natural in some ways have opposite vibes—glam vs. casual—their commonality is in a certain worldly, arguably sensual, quality (both essences tend to evoke notions of the embodied, physical world, as opposed to angelic, supernatural Ethereal or Dramatic).
Plus, Ethereal and Ingenue both have curving shapes and the gentlest overall vibes of all the essences, making these two easily confused in faces.
So it doesn’t surprise me that some Ethereal Dramatic Naturals are thought to have Romantic or Ingenue, and that one of the world’s most famous glamor icons is an EDN.
Ethereal Dramatic Naturals help challenge many style essences myths, revealing how much versatility all the essences truly have.
Ethereal Dramatic Natural Fashion
As an Ethereal Dramatic Natural, you get a huge range of fashion options.
You can:
Heavily emphasize your Natural to wear the most casual styles possible, from oversized pullovers and flannels to roomy sweatpants and jeans
Heavily emphasize Ethereal and Dramatic to wear avant-garde, high-fashion style
Emphasize all your essences to manifest a look that’s somewhere in between
One of the easiest ways to do Ethereal Dramatic Natural style is to create an edgy version of the Ethereal Natural boho aesthetic:
Here we see relaxed Natural vibes with the casual tank and loose knit sweater. The flowy shimmery pants have a lot of Ethereal (assuming they’re maxi-length!) and bring in Dramatic with the sharp geometric print.
If you’re highly Ethereal Natural, you could even do fully Ethereal Natural clothing and incorporate Dramatic in other aspects of your style, like adding large geometric jewelry or other edgy accessories:
Ethereal Natural boho dress with intense stilettos that suit Dramatic.
Or if you’re highly Dramatic Natural, you can emphasize those essences and bring in Ethereal in smaller amounts. Like a Canadian Tuxedo (Natural) pointed-toe heels (Dramatic) look:
Pair with layered Ethereal chain necklaces and perhaps a shimmery Ethereal top:
More inspiration:
The moody monochromatic palette feels Dramatic, and if the skirt is a narrow maxi, that would also be a Dramatic piece. The sheer, long sleeve blouse is a great Ethereal staple. And the oversized jacket worn on just one shoulder has a lot of casual Natural.
Ethereal tie-dye print roomy Natural shrug, paired with Dramatic narrow skirt (assuming it’s maxi legnth).
Ethereal Dramatic Natural Hollywood Families
Finally, I’m always fascinated by how people seem to inherit their style essences in predictable ways.
And several very famous families blend high amounts of Ethereal, Dramatic, and Natural:
Demi Moore (Ethereal Dramatic) and Bruce Willis (Dramatic Natural) have three Ethereal Dramatic Natural daughters—Rumer Willis, Scout LaRue Willis, and Tallulah Willis.
Similarly, Ethereal Dramatic Uma Thurman and Dramatic Natural Ethan Hawke have an Ethereal Dramatic Natural daughter, Maya Hawke.
Additionally, Dramatic Natural Classic Gwyneth Paltrow and Ethereal Dramatic Natural Chris Martin have an Ethereal Dramatic Natural daughter, Apple Martin.
I like to type biological families, because it’s one way to show patterns in what the types tend to look like in faces.
Based on my observations, the vast majority of people will have a style type that combines essences from both their parents, without incorporating essences that neither parent has (though exceptions are certainly possible to this general rule).
Ethereal Dramatic Natural Beauty
EDNs have an amazing mix of conventional meets unconventional looks.
This essence blend also hints at the fascinating reality of “unconventionally conventional beauty”, since the otherworldly, “unconventional” Ethereal and Dramatic essences appear to be increasingly integrated into modern beauty standards.
With their otherworldly-meets-down-to-earth vibes, Ethereal Dramatic Naturals simultaneously fit many popular beauty ideals and stand out as refreshingly unique.
