Romantic Ethereal Ingenue

“Alluring Angel”

“Awe” is a fascinating, mysterious emotion that may benefit mental and even physical health. We feel it when we perceive something impressive or sublime—something so remarkable, it gives us the sense that reality is more complex and intriguing than we previously thought.

You might feel awe, for instance, while staring at a sunset or at a great work of art.

To me, Romantic Ethereal Ingenues (REIs) also inspire awe:

REI Natalie Imbruglia (she has a small amount of Classic, too, as a fourth essence).

Ethereal evokes awe by symbolizing the mystical or spiritual—something beyond everyday reality.

And curvy Romantic and Ingenue features can be so rounded and full, they feel hypnotic and deep, like you could get lost in them.

Here’s 10 things to love about this essence blend, plus tips on your best makeup and fashion.

1) Mesmerizing Beauty

REIs’ curvy features are almost hypnotic:

REI Zuri Tibby

Sometimes they even hypnotize you into not noticing when their hair and fashion clash with their face:

You may not have noticed the first time (since her eyes are so captivating), but this hair and top definitely aren’t Natalie’s most harmonious. Too casual and “yang” for her.

She’s still gorgeous, though, because the makeup is so flattering, and her features have such extreme beauty.

‍ ‍2) Rare Beauty

Compared to many other blends, pure Romantic Ethereal Ingenues seem much rarer.

We can see this by considering:

Romantic Ethereal Ingenue Celebrities

Romantic Ethereal Ingenue celebrities are on Pinterest and listed below. You’ll notice that the majority of them have a fourth essence:

  • Bipasha Basu

  • Gemma Ward (with Dramatic as a fourth essence)

  • Huening Kai (with Classic)

  • Heather Stewart-Whyte

  • Kylie Minogue

  • Lola Tung (with Classic)

  • Margarida Corceiro (with Classic)

  • Natalie Imbruglia (with Classic)

  • Shilpa Shetty (with Dramatic)

  • Zuri Tibby

Why does being a pure REI seem so rare?

As explored previously, most people’s bone structure has straight or straight-ish shapes: Dramatic, Gamine, or Natural.

Classic can also sometimes (though not always) add straight shapes to a face.

Gemma Ward has ultra-yin beauty: highly Ethereal and Ingenue, with some Romantic.

But if you study her bone structure, there is some (arguable) angularity there. The sleek, convergent shapes of her cheeks and jaw are commonly seen on Dramatic faces.

This doesn’t prove she has yang essence—sometimes features that appear straight to the naked eye do end up being yin.

The real clue that Gemma has Dramatic is that she’s harmonious in some Dramatic styling, including having all her hair slicked back from her face. She also pulls off heavier and more graphic eye makeup than we’d expect for someone with such delicate coloring and overall curvy features.

Like the vast majority of high fashion models, Gemma Ward has some Dramatic—the essence that most enables people to wear avant-garde, high-fashion looks.

Several other Romantic Ethereal Ingenue celebrities also have Dramatic or Classic as a fourth essence:

Margarida Corceiro has primarily Ingenue, with Romantic, Ethereal, and a small amount of Classic.

Her Classic might be in her hairline or jawline, which appear a bit straighter than the rest of her features.

(Classic sometimes manifests in faces as straight or straight-ish shapes, consistent with the tailored shapes of many Classic fashion elements: straight-leg dress pants, stiff blazers, etc. But Classic can also manifest in faces not as straight lines but simply as very balanced, typical facial proportions.)

Do Pure Romantic Ethereal Ingenues Exist?

Yes—for instance, Bipasha Basu is an REI with no other essences:

Shiny, full ringlets are extremely pretty for Bipasha’s Romantic-Ingenue combo. Her glowy skin finish ties in Ethereal.

Smiling commonly emphasizes sharpness or bluntness in the jawline. But we can see here that even when Bipasha smiles, her jaw still appears to have a curved rather than angular shape.

Do Fourth Essences Matter?

Fourth essences do matter in the sense that if you have one, then you can pull off some styling from that essence.

And many people will want to incorporate at least a little of their fourth essence in their outfits, to make their fashion fully harmonize with their face.

But when it comes to your overall vibe, the fourth essence typically has only a subtle impact (though there can certainly be exceptions).

This is because a person’s fourth essence is usually small in amount: around 15%, 10%, or even less.

And when an essence is less than 15%, its vibe can largely be overshadowed by the face’s other essences.

That’s why Romantic Ethereal Ingenue Classic and Romantic Ethereal Ingenue Dramatic celebrities can still be helpful examples for how REIs tend to look.

In a sense, these celebrities are REI—they just have an extra essence that makes their face a bit more structured than the purely REI one.

3) The Beauty of Softness

REIs prove that a face doesn’t need obvious angularity to be beautiful.

This essence blend also showcases the beauty of gentle, blended makeup. Here’s some celebrity examples:

Romantic Ethereal Ingenue Makeup

I love Gemma Ward’s eyes here. If you’re highly yin, one of your best general approaches to makeup is to emphasize your features primarily with soft, blended, curving, and non-matte applications.

This can be confusing, because it can seem paradoxical to create emphasis with softness.

But here Gemma shows how silver and gold shimmery eyeshadow, lightweight mascara, and thin winged liner is a perfect Ethereal Ingenue look. It commands attention on the eyes, but it does so with gentle textures.

Winged liner can be phenomenal for yin essences. But your best wing is going to be very different from traditional thick, graphic versions. You’ll generally want to get the line as thin as possible, as seen on Gemma.

A light balmy lip and glowy skin finish also suit her blend, and keeping the rest of the makeup understated really helps further emphasize her eyes.

Here’s an example of eye emphasis that’s less successful for REI:

Most of this makeup is actually great for REIC Natalie Imbruglia. The shimmer and smokiness on the eyes, the glow and gloss to the lips and cheeks—all accentuate her soft beauty.

But since Natalie’s features are so soft and curvy, the dark eyeliner below her lower lashline appears slightly heavy.

She’s stunning regardless, but using less eyeliner, a lighter eyeliner color, or blending the line more would help take this makeup from good to spell-binding.

This straight short hair doesn’t ideally connect with any of Natalie’s essences, but the light glowy eyeshadow really enhances her dreamy eyes.

REIs are also stunning in little to no makeup:

REI Heather Stewart-Whyte shines in barely-there makeup and a glowy skin finish.

Foundation with some shine tends to enliven yin beauty.

To Smile or not to Smile?

I typically analyze people’s essences using straight-faced photos, because smiling can sometimes really alter our facial geometry.

Take Kylie Minogue, for instance:

Ingenue Romantic Ethereal Kylie Minogue.

Short ringlets are so pretty for Ingenue. I love this highly Ethereal dress and glowy eyeshadow on Kylie, too.

Kylie Minogue could almost pass for a different—though still gorgeous—person when she smiles:

This subtly smoky eyeshadow and light glossy lip, plus chignon with a ringlet effect, are so good on Kylie.

And yet even though this makeup style is similar to the above photo, she looks a LOT different here.

A fascinating thing about highly “yin” people is that when they smile, their features can sometimes appear artificially angular.

This is because smiling can make the jawline look wider and larger, the lips look thinner, and the eyes appear narrower. So smiling can make it harder to see key “yin” features like narrow jawlines, plump lips, and curvy eyes.

Should You Avoid Smiling?

No—definitely keep smiling!

If your smile isn’t harmonious with your natural facial geometry, it can still be extremely beautiful.

This is because humans seem wired, at a core level, to be attracted to positive emotion and smiling faces.

So a smile that markedly changes your face can actually be especially eye-catching and magnetic.

You may also be able to find a version of a smile that better preserves the way your natural features look. And maybe you only use that smile in certain contexts or photos, rather than all the time.

Again, I 100% don’t recommend that you cease smiling.

But it is worth noting that smiling can sometimes make it harder to recognize a person’s real style essences, perhaps especially if they have a lot of yin.

4) Gorgeous Fashion

Romantic Ethereal Ingenue fashion embodies extreme femininity:

Ethereal maxi hemline and narrow flowy fabric, plus a print that combines medium-to-large size (Romantic) and small (Ingenue) florals. And if you look closely, you can see that the dress has two lace-trimmed tiers, one around ankle-length and the other around hip-length. Tiers often read as Ingenue, because they break up a longer garment and can create a subtle ruffle effect.

Every essence has plenty of options for conventionally feminine fashion. Gamines, Naturals, and Dramatics all have plenty of skirt and dress options, for instance.

But the three yin essences tend to get the most stereotypically girlish and womanly style elements, like lace, draping, ruching, and sheer fabric.

Romantic Ethereal Ingenue Fashion

REIs most iconic pieces are dresses or skirts:

A subtly tiered floral maxi dress, similar to what we saw above.

A highly Ethereal (sheer bishop sleeves) Ingenue (short flared skirt and tiers) dress, with subtle cheetah print that ties in Romantic.

A highly Romantic (sensual gathered scoop cold-shoulder neckline) Ethereal (sheer flowy skirt) gown. This suits Ingenue, too, from the pink hue and delicate jewelry.

Since this blend is so good in dresses, we might wonder:

Can Romantic Ethereal Ingenues wear pants?

Yes! Romantic Ethereal Ingenues have many pant options.

One example is palazzo pants, which tend to have a lot of Ethereal and sometimes Romantic:

Pants can be especially successful for REI if they’re draped or flowy, like these Ethereal Romantic palazzo pants with a high slit.

From this angle, the soft and draped pants masquerade as a skirt.

But they are in fact pants:

Pair with a highly Ingenue top—short puff sleeves, tiny ruffles—for a great REI look.

You can use the principle of “soft, flowy fabric” to make more traditionally yang pants work for the yin essences, too.

For instance, flared jeans are usually Ethereal Gamine or Ethereal Natural, because the flared silhouette creates a long s-shaped curve, and denim fabric is iconically stiff and casual.

But if you find flared pants in a much softer fabric, then they can be fully Ethereal.

See what to wear for Romantic, Ethereal, and Ingenue for more on these essences’ best fashion.

5) Complex Beauty

One surprising thing about this beauty type is that it isn’t more obvious who has it.

We might assume that since REIs lack significant “yang”, their intensely feminine beauty will make them really stand out from other types of faces.

And REIs do have very feminine-appearing faces. But I don’t think it’s easy for most people to distinguish REIs from faces with yang.

This is because many other style types also frequently have highly feminine-appearing faces. This includes:

  • Romantic Ethereal Gamine

  • Romantic Dramatic Ingenue

  • Romantic Ethereal Dramatic

  • Romantic Gamine Ingenue

  • Romantic Ethereal Natural

  • Ethereal Dramatic Ingenue

  • And many more!

Even though these blends have “yang” essence, many people with these blends will only have a rather small amount of yang .

So these blends can still look highly feminine overall.

Are you a Romantic Ethereal Ingenue?

If you have a very feminine-appearing face, REI is a definite possibility for your type.

But as noted above, many other blends also have highly feminine-appearing beauty.

Ultimately, what determines whether you’re REI is if you’re harmonious in the fashion of all three yin essences: sensual Romantic, supernatural Ethereal, sweet Ingenue.

Your blend enthralls with curves, detail, and complexity, spanning the full spectrum of highly feminine beauty.
