Romantic Ethereal Dramatic

“Enchantress”

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley

Adriana Lima

Gemma Chan

Kim Kardashian

Pros of being a Romantic Ethereal Dramatic (RED):

  • You share your style type with some of the world’s most famous models and actresses

  • You pull off sensual, dreamy, avant-garde looks:

RED Eva Longoria

Cons of being an RED:

  • What are you supposed to wear?

  • Like, what do you wear in professional or casual contexts—to work, to school, to walk your dog?

Probably not this.

RED is a strong contender for the “most elaborate” or “most complex” essence blend:

  • Gamine and Ingenue have a more casual feel.

  • Natural and Classic make fashion feel simpler and more understated.

The result: RED is one of the hardest, maybe the hardest, blends to make work for everyday life.

But, it’s not impossible!

Romantic Ethereal Dramatic Fashion

RED fashion usually isn’t subtle:

The RED vibe is glam, dreamy, and intense.

Easy to find on a runway. Harder to pull off in real life.

But you can actually get a lot of useful RED inspiration from:

  • high-fashion looks

  • red carpet style

  • and even bridal gowns:

Not the most wearable dress…

But it could inspire you to choose a Romantic waist-length top and Ethereal Dramatic narrow maxi skirt:

Still dressy, yes, but much more realistic.

If that still feels too formal, then here’s some of the most casual pants in existence:

Leggings! Dark leggings suit Romantic and Dramatic—they’re soft and sleek. You can pair them with long Ethereal tops or tunics.

Or wear cigarette trousers made from slightly thicker, slightly less clingy material. Or choose soft, non-denim flared pants to add Ethereal (flared jeans tend to feel causal—Ethereal Natural or Ethereal Gamine).

Throw on Romantic Dramatic ruched knee-high boots, a Dramatic leather jacket, and an Ethereal narrow burnout top, and you have an RED casual outfit. Choose lighter colors if monochromatic black feels too intense.

You can also create infinite variations of this look by changing your top, jacket, and shoes.

Romantic Ethereal Dramatic Hair and Makeup

Is it possible to embody RED without wearing glitter eyeshadow and miles-long falsies?

Yes!

Tips for wearable RED makeup:

1) Embrace Ethereal

At first glance, there’s basically no makeup here. But if you look closely, RED Ming Xi actually wears a ton of subtle Ethereal:

  1. Smoky eyeshadow sculpting her creases

  2. Light eyeliner on lower waterline

  3. Glowy pale lip

  4. Curled lashes to make them look longer, with maybe a gentle coat of mascara

Her straight hair suits Dramatic, and an off-center part with volume at the roots flatters Romantic.

Other Ethereal makeup options that don’t look overdone?

Shimmery inner eye corner highlight and glowy cheek highlight:

Bella’s dress makes this feel ultra-glam.

But with a different outfit, this makeup wouldn’t feel outrageous. Make it more understated by doing gentler Ethereal lashes.

Or, if you’re highly Romantic, you might want to keep the full lashes but do a nude or light lip—actually more flattering for Romantic than red.

If you’re highly Dramatic, you can keep the darker lip and sleek hair, too.

2) Be (a little) Dramatic

Dramatic makeup commands attention:

If Dramatic isn’t your strongest essence, then Eva Longoria’s extreme, blocky eye makeup might not be your ideal look—it can easily overpower Romantic and Ethereal.

What you can do is the hair—a long, wavy face frame flatters RE without feeling too formal.

If you are highly Dramatic, you can do bold eyes and pale lips with a lighter touch:

Dramatic liner and eyeshadow with a more blended feel—much better for Romantic, too.

Overall, this is gorgeous wavy hair and glam makeup for RED. But it still feels more red carpet than real life.

So, go for an even lighter touch:

Finally we’ve journeyed to a more wearable look, with gentler Ethereal colors on the lids and lips; dark outer corner smokiness for Romantic; and unblended liner for Dramatic.

Hair with volume at the crown is also amazing for Romantic.

3) Choose a single statement

Of all the types, REDs can wear some of the most out-there makeup. The trick is pairing hard and soft:

This shiny bomber jacket is more conventional than the very deep lip—but Stella Maxwell pulls off the lip much better.

Glossy dark lips tie in both R and D. Doing just very subtle, light smokiness on the eyes suits Ethereal.

This lip may clash with Lea Seydoux’s color season, but she’s still so striking here.

By doing a more understated eye and a highly-pigmented lip, we’re captivated by both features.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley with a more wearable version.

Again, the eye makeup is very light (besides the long lashes and liner, which you could skip or do in lighter colors or with a gentler application). This helps balance the bolder lip.

Do REDs Need Eyebrows?

As we see above, flattering brows for RED tend to be well-groomed and somewhat thin (by modern standards!).

In fact, of all the essences, Ethereals probably best pull off one of the most controversial—or maybe at this point just heretical—beauty choices:

Ultra-skinny brows! RED Pamela Anderson is known for them. Are they going to be everyone’s taste? No. But, if there’s anyone who can pull them off, it’s Ethereals.

Plus, Dramatics can sometimes handle very extreme styles, including very thick or thin brows. If you do thick brows as a Dramatic, you’ll still want them to feel controlled and groomed, rather than bushy or carefree.

Romantic’s best brows will be more substantial than Pamela’s: Romantics are flattered by arched brows that become thinner at the tails, which is hard to accomplish if your brows are already barely-there!

But, if you’re mostly Ethereal Dramatic—I’m not going to recommend ultra-thin brows to anyone, because that’s probably grounds for a lawsuit or something in this country—but let’s just say that Ethereals and Dramatics can sometimes rock the no-brow look.

Victoria’s Secret Angel?

Many REDs have been Victoria’s Secret models. So, do you have to be a super skinny, super tall model to be RED?

Definitely not! You can be very curvy and/or very short and have the RED type.

Height and body shape don’t always match a person’s essence blend. Plus, Romantics are stereotypically curvier and shorter than the standard runway model.

Is “Victoria’s Secret Angel” a good archetype for RED? Feel free to use it if you like! I’m hesitant to say it is, because there’s so much controversy surrounding that brand.

But there is one way that REDs’ association with VS models might be useful:

Lingerie-inspired Fashion

REDs can definitely dress modestly—in fact, Ethereals and Dramatics are best in elongated fashion, including extra-long sleeves, tops, and pant hems.

But if you have a lot of Romantic (and Ethereal), then elements from lingerie can be perfect fashion inspiration—things like:

  • sheer texture

  • gauze

  • silk

  • elaborate lace

  • thin straps

  • strappy or with multiple straps

  • soft, smooth, lightweight fabric

  • extreme colors—very dark, very vibrant, or very light

Again—entirely possible to dress in a modest, covered way as an RED. But conventionally sensual fashion can also be great inspo for Romantic Ethereal.

Confused For?

REDs can be chameleons, easily camouflaging as any other essence.

Romantic + Ethereal very frequently mimics Ingenue:

RED Coco Rocha—she looks so Ingenue to me! Especially in graphic makeup, because of the contrast with her mostly “soft” features. (She does have Dramatic, so I think she carries this eyeliner. But since there’s little R/E in the overall makeup, it’s not her most ideal look.)

Her combination of passionate, loving Romantic and gentle, delicate Ethereal gives her face a rather sweet, Ingenue-mimicking quality.

And yet I don’t think Ingenue is significant for her—not even as a fourth essence.

If you look at the fashion and makeup she pulls off as a supermodel—very elaborate, very dreamy, very intense. Ultimately, you want to type people by their most flattering styling, regardless of whether their vibe is a stereotypical match for their essences.

Vibe is important, but sometimes it’s hard to see a person’s true vibe when they’re not in flattering styling.

  • “Yin” essence + Dramatic can sometimes mimic the blunt-edged look of Natural

  • REDs with a lot of Romantic may appear to have shortening in their bone structure that can resemble Gamine and sometimes Classic

Maybe in part because REDs can have such complicated beauty, it’s easy for them to be mistyped!

Pros and Cons

REDs share their type not just with some Victoria’s Secret Angels but also supermodels like Naomi Campbell and beauty icons like Kim Kardashian.

So having the RED blend in the modern era may feel a lot like winning the style essences jackpot.

But there’s also real potential downsides to having this essence blend. The most obvious: with their elaborate beauty, REDs might feel most out-of-place, of all the types, in casual mainstream fashion.

So REDs who want to look authentic but also want to look consistent with modernity may find that they try very hard to seem like they aren’t trying too hard to manifest their essences, all three of which essentially embody putting effort into your look and trying-hardness.

REDs absolutely can look harmonious in realistic styling. But they may have to try harder than other types to seem like they aren’t trying hard.

Not that you should feel obligated to downplay the intensity of your essences to fit in with modern fashion! Some REDs might want to regularly embody the full complexity of their beauty. That’s a wonderful choice, too.

Villains?

Typing cartoon faces is kind of dubious—not something I really do anymore—but RED may be the essence blend of some of the most iconic cartoon Disney villians.

And real-life REDs might find that they can come off as unapproachable due to their glam, unique, and striking looks.

But having a lot of Ethereal can also mitigate RED intimidation, even making you appear quite gentle.

And things like facial expression, body language, and tone of voice are also extremely important in how you appear to others. So even for REDs who do come off as intimidating at first glance, there are ways to easily alter this impression.

Real Women?

Are REDs only found among the famous?

Definitely not! I’ve had several beautiful Style Analysis clients with this type. Romantic Ethereal Dramatic is the essence blend of many celebrities, but it’s also the essence blend of many gorgeous real women.
