Ethereal Natural Gamine

“Carefree Mermaid”

Do you have the mermaid face type?

Many people do! Including these celebrities:

Ethereal Natural Gamine celebrities.

Famous faces with this beauty type include (left to right) Annie Murphy, Rasheda Jones, Jennifer Aniston, Miley Cyrus, and Kat Graham.

Ethereal Natural Gamine (ENG) beauty is mermaid-like! Why? It’s:

  • Mystical (Ethereal)

  • Carefree (Natural)

  • Playful (Gamine)

ENG actress Daryl Hannah played a mermaid in the film “Splash.”

Even in real life, she often wears her hair in long, narrow mermaid waves—so good for her beauty!

So ENGs have a strong connection to the mermaid archetype.

But they can also be “beauty chameleons” and embody a variety of vibes.

More on how below!

Ethereal Natural Gamine Hair and Makeup

Some of the best tips and tricks for ENG hair and makeup:

1) Be a Beauty Chameleon

Part of what makes ENGs so amazing—they can pull off utterly opposite aesthetics:

ENG Kat Graham is gorgeous in understated, mostly Natural makeup…

and in show-stopping, playful, ultra-bold looks:

  • Shimmery Ethereal inner corner highlight

  • Bronzey Natural creases

  • Daring bright sparkly lip that Ethereal Gamines are uniquely suited to pull off

ENGs have endless makeup options, because:

  • Naturals are flattered by lightweight, fresh-faced makeup

  • Gamines wear some of the loudest makeup of all the essences

  • Ethereals can also handle a good bit of makeup, but basically the opposite style as Gamines: gentle and angelic vs. graphic and bold.

So, you can explore different combos to see what best suits you—and you may find that you don’t have just one “best look” but multiple!

This is really true of all the blended types—the cool thing about having two, three, or four style essences is that it gives you many beauty options.

Another ENG beauty chameleon: Shailene Woodley

Amazing in Gamine darkly tightlined eyes, bright lip, and super short hair…

and in lighter makeup, plus long layers that emphasizes her Natural.

For many people, the short Gamine hair and tightlining would feel like too much, and this extra-long hair would feel like too much—but because of the magic of ENG, Shailene pulls off both.

This is also a good example of flattering Natural hair—a “straight-ish,” slightly tousled or laidback texture, especially with long layers. And while the color may not be ideal for Shailene’s season, sunkissed-highlights can help create the impression that you spend a lot of time in nature!

One more ENG beauty chameleon—Cailee Spaeny:

Pretty in bronzey + shimmery eyes that emphasize her Natural and Ethereal…

and in a Gamine short crop and pop of color lip!

2) Know Your Essence Amounts

So, ENGs can be chameleons.

Or they can be pretty predictable when it comes to hair and makeup, because they’ve learned what works for them:

ENG Jennifer Aniston has primarily Natural, so she’s great in laidback styling.

Natural makeup tends to look fresh-faced, as if it’s possible that your bronzey cheeks could just be the effect of spending time in the sun!

Jennifer Aniston seldom switches things up with a pixie cut or bold lip—and that’s ok!

If you’re much stronger in one essence than any other, then it makes sense to use that essence as the focal point of your hair/makeup, and then add your other essences in smaller amounts:

This is mostly still her signature highly Natural beauty look, but if you closely, there’s blue eyeshadow or eyeliner on the lower lashline—a great Gamine pop of color!

3) Know What to Avoid

ENGs have a ton of hair and makeup options, but some looks are going to be a tough sell:

Extra-long, blunt-cut straight hair is awesome for Dramatics but tends to feel heavy on other types.

Same with extra-long, extra-thick winged liner. Long and very narrow, curving wings can suit Ethereals. But this blocky version overpowers ENG Miley Cyrus.

(I know Miley has recently had a changing look… possibly a future post!)

Graphic eyeliner can be perfect for Gamines.

But especially if you have a lot of Ethereal and light coloring like ENG Michelle Pfeiffer, then heavy eyeliner doesn’t ideally enhance the eyes.

A lighter touch with what appears to be delicate purple shadow—SO pretty for Michelle and her Ethereal beauty.

Ethereal Natural Gamine Fashion

ENGs have one of the coolest fashion aesthetics, combining:

  • mainstream athleisure

  • boho style

  • eclectic style

  • whimsical/fairy/mermaid style

It sounds just a tad complicated but can actually be super simple! You just need:

7 ENG Wardrobe Staples

1) Denim jeans

Naturals and Gamines are great in the cropped, wide leg denim style seen here

ENG is the Denim Blend. You’re awesome in basically every mainstream denim style, from wide-leg to skinny jeans to relaxed-fit to full-length to cutoffs. Cropped jeans, flared jeans, black jeans, blue jeans—you get them all!

Really the only mainstream denim category to avoid is the most polished, tailored-feeling, stiff, straight-leg Classic styles (the kind of jeans that are so formal, they’re business casual approved).

2) Graphic tees or patterned tops

(And more denim—cropped jean skirts flatter Gamine, while longer versions suit Natural!)

Gamines wear some of the funnest geometric prints.

If the print’s edges feel carefree and rugged, that adds Natural.

Cool blouse with Gamine and Ethereal

And if you blend different blues for an aquatic feel, you get Ethereal Gamine!

Natural pinstripe blouse and Ethereal Natural tousled long narrow waves--great hair for Ethereal Natural blends

Pinstripes are stereotypically Classic but can easily be Natural if there’s “variation in the weight of the line” (meaning the pinstripes are of different thicknesses) and especially if the edges feel hazy rather than sharply defined.

Ethereal lace top

For a dressier look, lace with long, curving shapes is made for Ethereal.

3) Loose sweater or cardigan

Ethereal Natural essence blend cardigan and short Gamine plaid skirt--fun Ethereal Natural Gamine fashion

Baggy for Natural, or long and flowy for Ethereal.

4) Flannel, denim, or corduroy tops and jackets

Fashion theory: flannels go with almost anything and make basically every outfit look cooler.

5) Flowy scarf

Ethereal faces are amazing in floaty scarves--one of their fashion wardrobe staples

This is Ethereal’s version of “goes with any outfit, makes any outfit look cooler.”

6) Layered necklaces

Chain necklaces are another Ethereal essence wardrobe essential

Often Ethereal, and can add Gamine with playful charms.

7) Sneakers, sandals, and boots

What should ENGs Avoid?

Ingenue! And obviously all the other essences. But Ingenue is a particular one to watch for, since you’ll often find Ingenue style incorporated into boho style. Look out for tiny florals , short ruffled or puff sleeves, and short flared dresses and skirts.

You’ll be able to find plenty ENG pieces that don’t have Ingenue, but it is something to watch for.

Ethereal Natural Gamine Faces

Like ENG fashion and makeup, ENG faces have immense variety.

In fact, many ENG celebrities really don’t look much alike in a literal sense.

Jennifer Aniston headshot--the friends star is one of the most famous celebrities with a high percentage of Natural essence

Jennifer Aniston

Miley Cyrus headshot, another very famous celebrity with notable Natural, though more Ethereal and Gamine

Miley Cyrus

Jennifer Aniston and Miley Cyrus are both ENG, but Jennifer has a ton of Natural, with smaller amounts of Gamine and Ethereal, and Miley has more Ethereal and Gamine, with a smaller amount of Natural.

(Miley’s mother Tish Cyrus is purely Ethereal Gamine, illustrating how we inherit our style essences.)

So despite that Jennifer Aniston and Miley Cyrus share all the same essences, their literal facial features are quite different. (Though in the above photos, they really do both seem to have the a mermaid vibe going on.)

That’s one reason typing people can be so difficult: there isn’t any single blueprint for how each style type should look, and people with the exact same style type can have extremely different facial feature shapes and sizes—and of course different skin tones, eye colors, and more.

So, sometimes it’s hard to see the commonality across ENG faces.

Ethereal Natural Gamine Aura

But in a figurative sense, what Ethereal Natural Gamines have in common is their mystical, lively, relaxed aura. Their faces pull off the amazing feat of being otherworldly yet down-to-earth.

ENG Farrah Fawcett

In more casual styling, their look can be gorgeous girl-next-door. In mermaid waves and mystical costumes, Ethereal Natural Gamines can easily embody mermaids, fairies, or other supernatural beings. You can often see both these vibes in them simultaneously.

ENG AnnaSophia Robb

Looking at my Pinterest Board of Ethereal Natural Gamine celebrities, I overall feel calm and happy. I’m struck by Ethereal’s serenity, Natural’s ease, and Gamine’s high spirits.

ENG Ayo Edebiri

This vibe is distinct from some of the more serious, high-maintenance types, such as Dramatic blends.

Importantly, those types are amazing, too. But I don’t think I’d feel as relaxed and cheerful as I do looking at the ENG board if there were Dramatic vibes there, or even Romantic—those two essences tend to feel serious and intense, vs. light-hearted and gentle.

That said, seeing beautiful Annie Murphy’s face on the Ethereal Natural Gamine board, I was compelled to check if she has Dramatic as a fourth essence, because to me, she somewhat has that striking, could-be-Dramatic vibe.

Annie Murphy looking cool in a boldy Gamine lip and playful fringe leather jacket

I’m definitely getting mermaid vibes from Annie Murphy. But in edgy styling and with her dark brows, she could pass for an Ethereal Dramatic Gamine “edgy mermaid.”

But I verified she doesn’t have significant Dramatic. I think sometimes Gamine’s pointiness + Natural’s confidence + Ethereal’s otherworldliness can mimic the intensity of Dramatic.

Really all the essences and essence combinations can mimic one another, which is why virtual draping is so important—actually testing and analyzing what a person looks best in rather than, say, assuming they have Dramatic because in some photos they look striking and intimidating.

So it’s a good guideline that ENG beauty is relaxing and positive-mood-inducing. But this guideline isn’t a foolproof way to tell whether someone has this type.

Conclusion

Ultimately, Ethereal Natural Gamine’s unique, versatile, breathtaking beauty is too complex to reduce to a simple explanation.

P.S. More Thoughts on Blended Vibes

Thinking about ENGs also makes me think about how different essences can sometimes take on different vibes depending on their overall blend.

For instance, Ethereal Natural Classics in theory should have (and in some ways do) a fairly similar vibe to ENG. But overall, from my perspective, ENC celebrities often look more intense and sort of “soul-staring” compared to ENG. Something about the seriousness and polish of Classic seems to affect Ethereal and Natural, whereby we’re struck by Ethereal’s wise, knowing, quietly powerful aura, and Natural’s strong, confident aura.

For ENG, Gamine changes things a lot (at least sometimes): Gamine is playful, energetic, exuberant, unserious, teasing, and flirty. So, when Gamine combines with E and N, it almost seems like the more carefree, relaxed, dreamy, unserious sides of those essences are brought out.

Importantly, this WON’T be true for everyone. If you’re an ENG with a ton of Ethereal, for instance, then your overall vibe might be rather serious and quietly intense.

And if you’re an ENG have a very high amount of Natural, you might find that your vibe is very confident and even sometimes surprisingly intimidating. As we talked about for RDN and DNC celebs, this sometimes seems to happen when Natural is paired with other serious, intense essences—Natural seems to take on a more serious, intense, powerful, sometimes borderline intimidating quality.

Can Natural also have this quality in other faces, including ENGs? Yes, especially in highly Natural faces.

So ultimately, my descriptions of the types will not and cannot capture the specific vibe of every person with that type, because we truly are beautifully unique. And that’s a great thing.

But, if we wanted to capture the overall vibe of the ENGs celebs I’ve found so far—peaceful. Fun. Joyful. Calm yet lively. Relaxing yet energizing. Extremely positive vibes. An incredible blend.
