Dramatics have ample print options.

But if you’re a pure Dramatic, then your best fashion is unique—even avant-garde.

So you’ll want to avoid many conventional patterns, including:

Basic plaids
Basic horizontal stripes
Basic very thin pinstripes
Florals
Polka-dots
Paisley

But you can likely still wear some of these if you have other essences in your blend.

Dramatic Blended Prints

Most people aren’t a pure type. But even if you only have a little Dramatic, you can still be flattered by fully Dramatic prints.

You can also choose designs that combine two or more of your essences, like:

Dramatic Classic

Look for **pinstripes on the border of Dramatic and Classic**: thick enough to feel intense and Dramatic, but not so thick that they feel too avant-garde for Classic.

Choose stripes in Dramatic colors, relative to your personal coloring—dark, high-contrast, or bold.

Dramatic Ethereal

Look for **tie-dye** (Ethereal) **edgy band tees** (Dramatic).
The edginess could come from dark or moody colors, large angular lettering, or intense graphics like lightning bolts.

Dramatic Gamine

**Black and white long tuxedo stripes** suit Dramatic, and versions that incorporate **short horizontal stripes** can tie in Gamine.

Also look for prints that combine large-scale with small-scale geometrics.

Dramatic Ingenue

A tricky pair! These two have opposite aesthetics.

One good option is to choose **Dramatic prints or fabrics in iconically Ingenue colors**, like this alligator fabric (Dramatic) light purple (Ingenue) purse, or pastel blue snakeskin purse.

Dramatic Natural

Look for prints that combine **large-scale sharp-edged** geometrics with **large-scale blunt-edged geometrics**.

Or large bunt-edged shapes that feel edgy yet down-to-earth, like **cow prints**

Dramatic Romantic

Look for chain prints (Romantic) with **large geometric color-blocking** in intense colors (Dramatic).

Print-Mixing

Dramatics are amazing in print-mixing.

It’s true that solid-color outfits work well, too. These outfits underscore Dramatic’s dignified, serious side.

But there’s another side of the essence, a side that’s theatrical, experimental, even shocking.

And this side is so flattered by combining two—or more!—prints in a single look.

Here’s some approachable methods for Dramatic print-mixing:

Use Shoes, Scarves, or Other Accessories

Snakeskin is a relatively easy-to-find Dramatic print for footwear!

Pair with a striped sheer flowy skit and you have an amazing look that could suit an Ethereal Dramatic Gamine.

A cropped hoodie with large convergent color-blocking plus an oversized plaid scarf—great look for a Dramatic Natural Gamine.

Play with Scale

Snakeskin pants and what appears to be a tiger print top! Creative look and fantastic if you’re highly Dramatic.

Be Layered

I like this black top for Dramatic Gamine, since it combines short and long stripes, and horizontal stripes with long diagonal stripes.

And More!

Of all the essences, Dramatics might be best at pulling off the hard-to-pull-off.

Although you can argue that every essence is fabulous in styles that are hard to pull off by the other essences. And I think that’s true.

But Dramatics are particularly well-suited to styles that could feel “overpowering” for types with a gentler vibe, like intense colors and complicated patterns.

So if you’re a Dramatic, there’s endless exploration to be done with prints and print-mixing.

Colors and Color Season?

Dramatic loves bold colors and color combinations, like wearing monochromatic dark colors, very high-contrast color schemes, or unusual color pairings.

This can be a great match for some seasons, especially Winters, and be a bit less of a natural pair for others.

The good news is that every season can create a Dramatic color impression by wearing their darkest or highest-contrast colors.

And if you’re someone who prefers wearing gentle-feeling colors and color schemes, the other good news is that most people aren’t a pure type.

So if you like wearing calm colors, you could simply match your color scheme to one of your other essences (such as Ingenue, Natural, Classic, or Ethereal, which are very flattered by tranquil color schemes).

As described above, this can also be a good option to create a Dramatic blended print—you could find an iconic Dramatic print, like snakeskin, in a gentle color, like light blue.

General Print-Mixing Tips

Here’s a summary of general print-mixing strategies (we also covered all these previously when discussing Romantics and Gamines!)

These are absolutely guidelines, not rules—all can sometimes be broken with success:

Pair a subtler print with a louder one
Mix a simpler print with a more complex one
Mix a more well-known and recognizable print (like snakeskin) with a more unusual one
Pair larger scale with smaller scale
Pair a printed garment with printed shoes, accessories, or jewelry
Have one or more of your prints be mostly neutral
Mix prints in the same or similar color schemes
Keep color season mostly consistent—if the print mostly suits your season while also incorporating some colors that are outside your season, it may still work for you. But in general, if you like to dress by your color season, then you’ll want the majority of the print’s colors to match that

Colors and Prints or Neutrals and Solids?

What’s interesting about Dramatic fashion is that a lot of people, including myself, tend to associate Dramatic with head-to-toe dark neutrals.

And those kinds of outfits do really flatter Dramatic.

They express the essence’s dignified, powerful side.

But those outfits don’t capture every aspect of Dramatic beauty.

Dramatic fashion can also be very colorful and embellished, filled with unique, complex prints and patterns. A big clue that this is true is the name itself—Dramatic. And synonyms like:

Theatrical.
Expressive.
Emotional, even.

Dramatics’ vibe can communicate strong emotions, like intense confidence and bravery. So their outfits can be highly evocative and expressive.

And the irony of head-to-toe neutrals being highly associated with Dramatic is that these outfits can actually feel quite stoic and calm.

Again, neutral, solid-color outfits are very flattering for Dramatic —they simply express a particular side of Dramatic, the more dignified, calmer side.

But Dramatic fashion can also be emotionally charged. You can choose lots of colors and prints, mix prints, even wear fashion that borders on feeling fun—theatrics and dramas are meant to entertain.

This fashion will still tend to feel serious in some way, especially in Dramatic’s deep, moody colors. Ultimately it’s still drama, not comedy.

But even dramas can have some light-hearted, playful moments.

Then Why is Dramatic Fashion Often Neutral and Solid-color?

The reason I often visually depict Dramatic fashion this way is simply that it’s easy to find!

Head-to-toe black is a reliable outfit formula that looks edgy and cool. Combining different colors and prints can be a little trickier, which is part of why I’m writing full-length blog posts about it. (A blog post about wearing head-to-toe black could also be interesting, and has almost definitely been done by others, and maybe I’ll do it in the future. But compared to combining different colors and prints, it’s a little simpler. Step 1: Choose a black shirt. Step 2: Black pants. Step 3. Black shoes. Etc.)

(To be fair though, there is a lot of complication and creativity that can happen when wearing neutral monocrhomatic outfits! Lots of opportunity to play with textures, silhouettes, etc.)

I think this is true of some of the other essences, too, in that it’s easiest to find visual examples of the essences in neutrals, even if that’s not what’s absolutely most flattering to them.

With Ethereal, for instance, it tends to be easiest to find Ethereal fashion in light neutrals—which are fantastic for Angelic beauty.

But, maybe surprisingly, Ethereal is one of the essences that’s most flattered by color. I would even say that there’s a version of every color in the rainbow that’s more flattering to Ethereal than any neutral.

Still, neutrals and solid-color outfits are great, and I personally really enjoy wearing and viewing this kind of fashion.

But it’s also so fun to play with color and print, and can do so much for enhancing visual harmony.

Essence of Duality?

In many ways, Dramatic is an essence of duality, an essence with the amazing ability of being flattered by extremes, such as:

Very short or very long hair and hemlines
Very high-contrast fashion and makeup, where very light colors are paired with very dark ones
Very neutral, monochromatic outfits or very loud, colorful and printed ones

Another duality we haven’t mentioned as much so far is level of detail—meaning, how much embellishment and accessorizing an essence wants to look its best.

We’ll likely discuss this concept extensively in the future, for all seven essences.

But a teaser for Dramatic is that its preferred level of detail is similar to its preference for length, colors, and prints: the essence gravitates to opposites and extremes.

So people with Dramatic tend to look amazing in very little, stark detail, and in a very high, exaggerated level of detail.

Dramatic brings the drama—the highs and lows, the moving between extremes.
