Ethereal Gamine Ingenue Fashion
What do mermaids and fairies wear? Whimsical, enchanting, charming outfits:
EGI Style—Ethereal sheerness, Ingenue ruffles, Gamine neon color and cat-eye glasses
In contrast to more conventional aesthetics (like Natural Classic), EGI fashion isn’t always easy to find in stores.
Here are different options for embracing your unique style as an EGI:
Option 1: Blend All Your Essences
This is probably the hardest method. But it might also be the most fun.
This blouse has:
Ethereal long sheer sleeves
Ingenue tiny ruffles and peplum
Gamine contrasting stripes and relatively short V-neck
This top could work well paired with slim-fit jeans (or other narrow Gamine pants) for balance.
If you want an easier method of EGI dressing, consider:
Option 2: Pair Dresses with Jewelry/Accessories
Ingenues and Ethereals have endless pretty dress options, like this Ingenue floral version:
The geometric-detail choker adds Gamine, while the long chain necklace adds Ethereal.
Another outfit that dares to be fully EGI:
Ethereal semi-sheer fabric and long sleeves
Ingenue delicately pleated bodice
Mini geometric Gamine purse
Gamines are also awesome in certain dress styles, especially shift dresses with high necklines and short hemlines.
Option 3: Pair Ethereal Ingenue Tops with Gamine Bottoms
This top looks like the blouse version of the above dress!
And the matte vibrant lip is perfect for Gamine.
You could also add Gamine pants, which tend to be narrow, cropped, and tapered, like skinny jeans or other skinny or slim-fit pants.
Option 4: Pair Gamine Tops with Ethereal Ingenue Skirts
Gamines have infinite crop-top options; Ethereals and Ingenues get many flowy skirts.
Combine both for another easy EGI outfit.
Ethereal Gamine Ingenue Makeup and Hair
Just like EGI fashion, EGI makeup feels playful, sweet, dreamy, and unique:
Here are some EGIs in the wild/Red Carpet, with thoughts on how their styling does or doesn’t match their essences:
EGI Carey Mulligan starred in the 1920s period film The Great Gatsby. It’s an apt casting, both because she’s a phenomenal actress and because some of the most iconic 1920s fashion trends (like flapper dresses with delicate and shimmery detail) are perfect for EGI.
In this photo, the top’s airy Ethereal fabric connects to Carey’s delicate beauty. But the ultra-curvy Romantic neckline has a vibe that’s not found in her face.
The makeup also feels a bit too conventional and Classic.
Carrie Mulligan has mesmerizing EGI beauty, but she can look slightly out-of-place when her styling doesn’t suit her essences.
What saves the above look (besides her inherent beauty): the hair!
The narrow waves flatter her Ethereal, while the length suits her Ingenue (and is ok for Gamine).
An example of more successful EGI makeup:
Here EGI Hayden Panettiere sports a similar hairstyle to Carey’s—it’s awesome on them both.
Hayden’s makeup also reflects EGI, with lots of glow, shimmer, and pinky blush. The makeup colors may not be ideal for her season, but they suit her magical essence blend.
The glaring disconnect: the black plunging V-neck top. She’d be even more stunning in a blouse with delicate, flowy fabric.
Since Hayden has Gamine, she also pulls off straight hair with piecey layers:
Compared to the previous photo, this makeup feels better for Hayden’s color season. But the bronzey shadow in a straight-across application is more suited to a Natural blend—it reads as slightly too down-to-earth compared to Hayden’s whimsical beauty. The gloss and highlight are great for EGI, though.
Matching your makeup to your color season is important for enhancing your beauty. But matching it to your style type might be even more critical.
EGIs’ Best Hair?
Your best hair as an EGI depends on your essence amounts:
If you have primarily Gamine, you can mimic Hayden’s above look, with straight piecey layers around shoulder-length (or even chin-length or shorter)
If you have a lot of Ethereal, you’ll be awesome in narrow waves:
If you’re an EGI with a ton of Ingenue, you might want to choose tight ringlets instead of waves. You can also rock bangs:
EGI Susan Sarandon’s cute short bangs with curved edges are terrific for Ingenue. The baby bang length flatters Gamine, too.
Her overall hairstyle almost appears fully Ingenue—it’s as if her Ingenue ringlets have been slightly undone and tousled, bringing in Gamine (and incorporating some longer waves that work for Ethereal).
Can EGIs with a lot of Ethereal do bangs? Yes!:
EGI Nicole Richie makes bangs work for Ethereal—they’re extra-long (eye-skimming), with gently curving edges. They’re also not extremely full, which is good, since extra-long full bangs often have Dramatic.
So far we’ve seen mostly moderate to short hairstyles. Can EGIs pull off very long hair?
If they’re highly Ethereal, absolutely!
EGIs with a ton of Ethereal can rock waves that extend many inches beyond the shoulders.
What EGIs may want to avoid is ultra-long, straight locks:
EGIs are Hard to Type
Ethereal Gamine Ingenues can have a very characteristic, mystical-meets-youthful vibe.
But they can also be tricky type, for several reasons:
EGIs can be confused with other Ethereal Gamine blends. Ingenue has lots of conceptual overlap with both Ethereal and Gamine, meaning that Ingenue in EGI can easily be missed.
EGI’s Ethereal may also be overlooked, since EGIs sometimes defy the Ethereal stereotype of having a long face.
In fact, EGI faces often appear short, and even round or broad. This can lead EGIs to be mistaken for Naturals, since Naturals are associated with having wide, broad bone structure.
EGIs can also be mistaken for Classics. The EGI combination of shorter and longer shapes can mimic the look of the moderate, balanced Classic essence.
Are You EGI?
So EGI faces can easily be mistaken for having Natural or Classic.
But when an EGI wears Natural Classic fashion, it tends to become clearer that those aren’t their essences.
An EGI in utterly conventional clothes feels kind of like trying to subdue magic. Like Harry Potter (who is played by Ethereal Gamine Daniel Radcliffe!) living with his muggle relatives. The combination doesn’t work.
Simple fashion is beautiful. But it doesn’t connect to EGI’s equally beautiful and whimsical vibes.
What’s tricky is that since modern fashion is so dominantly Natural, it’s often hard to determine whether someone truly looks harmonious in a mainstream, sweater-and-roomy-jeans outfit, or if they just look right to us because we’re so used to seeing them like that.
Sometimes we mistake familiarity for harmony.
Plus, Classic fashion is so simple and inconspicuous, it typically doesn’t look “bad” on people who lack Classic. It just looks boring. (This isn’t true of people who actually have Classic—on them, simple style is captivating.)
In short, for EGIs and anyone, it’s helpful to ask whether A. you actually look your best in mainstream fashion or B. mainstream fashion feels right because it’s familiar and comfortable, despite not truly being your best look.
Color Season Connection
No matter your style essences, and no matter your color season, there’s a way to make them work beautifully together.
But, certain style essences do seem to have stronger conceptual associations with certain color seasons.
EGI Color Associations:
Ethereals are incredible in gentle colors and lightweight fabrics. So, gentle and understated hues (especially Summer colors) tend to have the strongest association with Ethereal*
EGI Logan Browning—her True Summer season has a similar vibe to her delicate, dreamy Ethereal beauty
The Ingenue essence, with its gentle and dainty vibe, also has a lot of conceptual overlap with the Summer season, while simultaneously having a strong association with cheerful Spring palettes
And the lively Gamine essence is definitely most similar in vibe to Spring, the season of new life
So, Summer and Spring have the strongest conceptual overlap with the Ethereal Gamine Ingenue type.
Spring’s warm, vibrant colors and Summer’s cool, understated ones embody the EGI vibe.
But if you’re an EGI Autumn or Winter, you can absolutely still create harmony between your season and style palette.
Here are your options:
Focus on wearing your lightest, gentlest-appearing colors to create an Ethereal or Ingenue impression.
Wear your most pigmented colors, especially in cheerful shades like yellows and oranges, to create a Gamine feel.
Combine colors in a way that suits your essences—for example, pair two similar shades, like a light blue top with medium blue pants, to create an ombre Ethereal impression. Or pair an orange top and blue pants to create a color-blocked Gamine impression
*As a side note, the Autumn season also contains understated, muted hues (just like Summer), and muted color does flatter Ethereal. So people with Autumn coloring do have some inherent connection to the Ethereal vibe. The catch: Autumn’s vibe is down-to-earth, whereas Ethereal’s vibe is more head-in-the-clouds. So compared to Summer colors, Autumn colors don’t tend to have as strong of an association with otherworldly Ethereal. In fact, people who are Autumn, especially True Autumn, may sometimes have a hard time being recognized as highly Ethereal (like Ethereal Dramatic Ingenue Olivia Palermo).
EGI Challenges
Ethereal Gamine Ingenues have the challenge that their best fashion doesn’t tend to be mainstream, whether in more casual, semi-formal, or very formal contexts:
In casual contexts, modern fashion tends to be overwhelmingly Natural.
In semi-formal or professional contexts, people often wear highly Classic fashion.
And while any style essence is fair game in very formal contexts—like dances, Red Carpets, or other special events—the overt sexiness and theatricality of Romantic Dramatic style often dominates.
So Ethereal Gamine Ingenue isn’t what we tend to think of for casual fashion, formal fashion, or in-between fashion.
Because of this, it can be tough to find an Ethereal Gamine Ingenue dressed in their authentic clothing styles “in the wild.” Their unique aesthetic simply doesn’t predominate in the mainstream.
Fantastical EGI
And part of what makes EGIs so special is that their vibe isn’t mainstream.
The EGI aesthetic is whimsical, fantasy-esque, fairytale beauty.
EGI’s challenge: they might have to search hard to find fashion that embodies their aesthetic. But the upside is that they get to bring magic, sweetness, and fun into everyday life.
