Ethereal Dramatic Ingenue
“Edgy Angel”
Ethereal Dramatic Ingenue (EDI) Kaley Cuoco
Ethereal Dramatic Ingenues have breathtaking, out-of-this-world beauty—
—and they are really hard to type.
Why?
Of all 7 essences, Ethereal and Ingenue are the gentlest
So a face with primarily Ethereal or Ingenue will overall have a gentle vibe—the opposite of an intimidating Dramatic vibe
This means that EDI’s Dramatic can be hard to see:
EDIs Ashley (left) and Mary-Kate Olsen (right)
The Olsen twins exemplify why EDIs are hard to type: they do not look like Dramatic stereotypes. Clues that they have Dramatic: Ashley here pulls off Dramatic slicked back hair; both twins pull off intense makeup, including tightlining (it even seems to work despite not always matching their color season). They also routinely pull off Dramatic fashion like sleek, elongated blazers and leather jackets.
Styling the Olsen twins as pure angels or fairies (in purely Ethereal Ingenue or even Ethereal Gamine Ingenue fashion) would feel costume-like. Too youthful and playful.
To look harmonious, they need some edgy Dramatic—even if at first glance, we might think we can rule out the essence for them entirely.

EDI Fashion
EDI fashion is stunning, but it’s not exactly mainstream:
Gown with Ethereal sheerness; Ingenue tiers and delicate lace; Dramatic ultra-long train
Two key reasons it’s hard to find people in EDI outfits:
EDI style is formal and yin, whereas modern fashion leans casual and yang
Very formal yin fashion (the kind often worn to weddings, red carpets, and other special events) can be highly Romantic—so it can be hard to find formal fashion that’s purely EDI
To find EDI fashion images, you could search for things like “edgy mystical style” and “edgy fairy style.”
(If you do this, be prepared to also encounter a lot of Natural, Romantic, and Gamine!)
You could also ask AI to create some outfits:
Blouse with delicate Ingenue puff sleeves and Ethereal sheerness.
Pair with Dramatic bottoms, like straight-leg full-length leather pants.
Ethereal Ingenues also have endless dress options:
Ingenue babydoll dress with Ethereal sheerness, plus elongated flow to the sleeves and bodice.
Pair an Ethereal Ingenue dress with a sculptural, edgy jacket to add Dramatic:
An extra-long, sleek Dramatic jacket layered over an Ethereal Ingenue dress.
The very high slit here adds Romantic, so you could choose a version with a low or no slit.
Another jacket and dress combo:
An extra-long Dramatic blazer adds edge to an Ethereal Ingenue fit-n-flare dress with sheer overlay.
Even with just a few examples, we can see the range of EDI fashion: from probably-won’t-work-in-real life, miles-long ruffled trains to knee-length dresses and blazers that look very practical for the real world.
Tips for Wearable EDI Fashion
To make EDI style more wearable, focus on finding the most practical bottoms possible:
Dramatic sleek, straight dress pants or full-length leggings
Ingenue fit-n-flare skirts or skorts around knee-length or mid-calf
Ethereal flowy palazzo pants
These pieces can make your style both easier to move around in and more casual-appearing.
For tops, you have more liberty, since tops tend to be less relevant to practicality (unless you choose flowy Ethereal sleeves that extend past the fingertips!)
And of course, if you want to embrace the fantastical, less practical side of EDI, that’s awesome, too.
EDI Celebs: Fashion, Hair, and Makeup
When searching for EDI celebrities in EDI styling, I again encountered the issue that highly formal fashion (including red carpet fashion) often has Romantic:
But after cropping the photo, it became clear that the bigger issue was the ultra-sexy Romantic top:
With the Romantic corset cropped out, Alison looks more harmonious—we can really see her mesmerizing EDI beauty.
And despite her sweet face, she does pull off Dramatic styling: full, straight, sleek, extra-long bangs, plus a blazer with razor-sharp shoulders. These Dramatic elements flatter her EDI beauty because they’re paired with gentle makeup (delicate blush, mascara, lipgloss).
Her waves here are a little full for Ethereal. But what makes them work is the very long distance between the “peak” of each wave, which creates an elongated Ethereal feel.
Alison’s Dramatic bangs and Ethereal waves are arguably even more flattering on her than Ingenue ringlets:
How can sweet-looking Alison Brie be equally flattered by Dramatic and Ingenue styling?
One reason is that a person’s style essences aren’t always obvious just by looking at their literal facial features.
And surprisingly, the Dramatic essence doesn’t always jump out at us with its intensity. When Dramatic isn’t a person’s dominant essence, its intimidating vibe can sometimes be subtle, especially if a person also has gentler essences like Ethereal and Ingenue.
Alison isn’t bad in Ingenue curls, but she appears just as or even more harmonious in long, sleek Dramatic hair:
Dramatic hair seems to frame Alison’s face as well as Ingenue curls. Here the gentle makeup—short lashes and pink lips—adds plenty Ingenue. Subtle inner corner highlight suits Ethereal.
Interestingly, when Alison really shines in Ingenue ringlets, her curls are balanced by Ethereal and Dramatic elements in her makeup, like a very pale glowy lip (Ethereal) and dark all-around tightlining (Dramatic).
Alison’s overall vibe is much more soft than intense, but her best styling does have a little Dramatic. The essence is significant for her, despite that it isn’t obvious in her face.
The same is true of many other EDIs, including Dakota Fanning. Her Dramatic isn’t obvious in her literal features, but she’s flattered by Dramatic styling:
Dakota Fanning typically wears her hair long and straight, and it really works for her—maybe even more than Ethereal waves:
Part of why straight hair looks so good on Dakota Fanning might be that her light blonde hair color already communicates a soft, angelic feel.
So when she wears her hair in waves or curls, that’s a lot of yin (maybe bordering on too much, depending on her outfit and makeup). Sleek, straight hair helps bring the edginess she needs to look her best.
Another way to test if someone has Dramatic is to see how they look with their hair slicked totally off their face, especially if they’re facing the camera straight-on:
This hairstyle in a straight-on shot is hard to pull off, but EDI Jourdan Dunn does it effortlessly, thanks to her face’s powerful Dramatic beauty.
Her makeup has a lot of Dramatic, too: dense, dark brows; upper and lower tightlining; no evident blush; and lips that appear de-emphasized compared to her brows and eyes.
As an EDI, Jourdann pulls off highly Dramatic styling. But her harmony skyrockets when she adds more Ethereal and Ingenue:
Here’s an unlikely EDI who also rocks slicked-back Dramatic hair:
With her captivating features, Sydney Sweeney reveals another reason EDIs can be so hard to type: when we look at faces, we tend to focus on people’s eyes, brows, and mouths (the facial features most relevant for communicating emotion, and also the features that tend to get the most emphasis with makeup). We may not focus as much on a jaw that’s strikingly angular and intense. But Sydney’s smile here helps show off strong, sleek, Dramatic-appearing bone structure.
With her curvy features and curvy body, I suspect many would type Sydney as Romantic. But cropping out the mature, highly Romantic top appears to increase her visual harmony:
The slick-backed, bone-structure-showcasing hair also has a mature quality, but it works because it flatters her Dramatic.
While the blingy earrings have some Romantic, their oval shape and continuous, narrow shine also flatter Ethereal, so they have a lot of connection to her face.
Another reason that it’s easy to mistype celebrities as having Romantic (especially when they have a lot of another yin essence) is that we’re used to seeing many celebrities in glamorous Romantic styling on red carpets.
Sometimes our brains mistake the feeling of familiarity for the feeling of harmony, especially since familiarity and harmony can both produce feelings of calm and relaxation.
EDIs are Hard to Type!
EDIs can easily be mistaken for Gamines and Romantics.
One thing that can help is to study both EGIs and EDIs. Here’s some EGI celebrities:
Sofia Richie, Hayden Panettiere, Jisoo, Carey Mulligan, and Lana Condor.
And here’s EDIs Ashley and Mary-Kate:
I wouldn’t place Ashley (left) or Mary-Kate (right) in the above EGI line-up. Their faces are edgier and more figuratively mature. We can especially see this with Mary-Kate—there’s an intimidating quality to her face not present in the EGIs.
Compared to EGIs, EDIs have an edgier, more intense vibe. Sometimes their bone structure and features will also have more obvious elongation or angularity.
The Olsen Twins Analysis
Between the two iconic twins, it definitely seems easier to “see” Mary-Kate’s Dramatic: her bone structure and her eyes appear a bit narrower and sharper than Ashley’s. While we can’t tell just by looking at a person exactly where in their faces their essences are, Mary-Kate does seem to have the more obvious Dramatic vibe.
But again, what’s most important when typing someone isn’t what they literally look like or whether they fit essence stereotypes: it’s the fashion they pull off.
So regardless of whether we think their faces look intimidating, both twins have Dramatic because they pull off Dramatic fashion and makeup.
EDIs and Romantic
Since EDIs often have highly “yin” faces with notably curvy shapes, plus Dramatic intensity, EDIs can also easily be mistaken for having the passionately intense Romantic essence.
This may be especially true if they have vivid or deep coloring:
Eliza Dushku could easily pass for Romantic—maybe a Romantic Dramatic Ingenue, Romantic Ethereal Dramatic, or even Romantic Ethereal Gamine or Romantic Gamine Ingenue.
But her intense bone structure and overall vibe ultimately is flattered by Dramatic rather than Gamine. Her beauty is also more delicate than Romantic—she has stunning, dreamy, sweet, beauty, but it lacks the kind of Romantic intensity that can pull off ultra-curvy necklines or other passionate detail—including makeup:
What do EDIs typically look like?
The celebrity EDIs I’ve found so far overwhelmingly have more Ethereal or Ingenue than Dramatic:
Is this true of most EDIs, beyond celebrities?
I don’t know. I’ve verified a few non-celebrities as EDI, and these real-life EDIs also have a greater percentage of yin than yang beauty.
In a way, this makes sense, since if you have two yin essences and one yang, you’re statistically likely to have more yin than yang beauty.
While I hope to find EDI celebrities who have more Dramatic, it’s possible that highly Dramatic EDIs are rare.
Amazing EDI
EDIs are, in general, difficult to type. They’re likely to be mistaken for having Gamine, Romantic, and potentially other essences.
But this also makes EDIs extremely fascinating, since as an EDI, your Dramatic will often be invisible to the naked eye.
So people may consciously perceive you as purely soft and sweet.
But it’s my belief that they will subconsciously perceive your intense, powerful Dramatic beauty, too.
I think we tend to accurately grasp people’s style essences subconsciously, even though they are typically harder to articulate with the conscious mind. If you let your body and emotions process EDI faces, your body will likely perceive the gentleness, the sweetness, and the imposing-ness—because that’s primarily how we process emotions, faces, and beauty. With our subconscious minds, rather than conscious understanding.
