The Seven Levels of Detail

Today is a friendly competition to see which style essence wins the title of Most Minimalist and which is crowned Most Detailed.

We’ll also explore practical tips for how to embody each essence’s preferred amount of detail.

What is “Detail?”

For our purposes, “detail” means “visual complexity.”

So “detail” includes anything that adds complication to your overall look, like:

  • Silhouettes—ruffles, gathers, and draping feel more complex than straight silhouettes.

  • Prints—patterns feel busier than solid colors.

  • Fabrics—lace or textured fabrics feel more detailed than smooth versions.

  • Embellishment—details like buckles or buttons can add complexity to an otherwise plain top or shoe.

  • Jewelry, accessories, hair, and makeup—these can all add a lot of detail to your overall impression. In general, curvy shapes feel more detailed than straight ones (though there can be exceptions).

The Seven Levels of Detail

Now we’ll find where each essence resides on the seven levels of detail:

Level 1: Polished Classic Detail

Cute Classic Gamine look.

In a non-twist of fate, Classic wins the title of “Most Minimalist.”

Classic Stats

  • Of all the essences, Classics wear:

    • The simplest silhouettes—straight, crisp, and with little embellishment.

    • The most understated prints, like pinstripes and neutral plaids.

    • The most minimalist jewelry and accessories, like unadorned chain necklaces.

    • The simplest hair: straight, around shoulder-length, and with every hair in place.

Why Does Minimalism Suit Classic?

Classics have evenly-spaced facial features: not especially wide-set or close together, long or short, large or small.

So Classics embody the beauty of balance.

And if you’re highly Classic, you can enhance your beauty by wearing clothing with symmetrical, standard silhouettes. This draws attention to the balanced and “standard” proportions of your features.

Wearing little detail can also help to keep the spotlight on the proportions of your clothing (and on the proportions of your face).

But if you wear unconventional, oversized, or ultra-embellished fashion, then this can clash with your moderate, balanced features.

Opposites can both be Beautiful

Importantly, Classic’s balanced nature represents a specific type of beauty—not the only type.

You can absolutely be beautiful with wide-set features or close-set features, or with elongation or shortening.

A given feature can be beautiful, and the opposite of that feature can also be beautiful.

Plus, plenty of stunning celebrities have no significant Classic.

With that said, Classic beauty is widely appealing, because visual balance can be seen as inherently harmonious.

Practical Takeaways

  • Classics prefer minimalist, conventional detail, like pearls or a simple wristwatch.

    • Bold embellishment can compete with your balanced proportions and timeless beauty.

    • Alternately, adding unique accessories can help express your other essences:

Classic Natural Romantic style.

If you’re highly Classic, a great option can be to wear mostly conventional and minimalist silhouettes and add another essence in detail, like these glam Romantic blingy flats and long wavy hair.

  • Low-contrast outfits can create a calm, minimalist feel.

  • But you might also explore medium- or high-contrast looks.

    • Color contrast (like pairing a light blue blouse with navy pants) emphasizes the boundaries of the individual pieces in your outfit, which underscores their moderate, balanced proportions.

Level 2: Edgy Dramatic Detail

Our gracious runner-up for Most Minimalist is Dramatic.

Dramatic Stats

  • Dramatics and Classics both thrive in minimalism, for similar and different reasons.

  • The similarity: Classic and Dramatic faces can be defined by straight lines of moderate (Classic) and long (Dramatic) lengths. These lines feel inherently streamlined and low-detail.

    • So, like Classics, Dramatics are flattered by structured, unembellished fashion.

  • The difference: while Classic wants a conventional feel (since the essence is defined by moderate, balanced lines), Dramatic wants a bold, edgy feel (since Dramatic is defined by elongation that feels striking and unique).

  • So Dramatic wants an exaggerated version of Classic fashion. Think unadorned elongated blazers, extra-long dress pants, and long, sleek, straight hair.

  • Wearing a minimalist outfit as a Dramatic communicates, “My face is so interesting and powerful, and my outfit’s exaggerated silhouettes are so interesting and powerful, I don’t need extra detail to look amazing.”

Dramatic silhouettes can be so captivating, they feel like a complete outfit in themselves.

The accessorizing here is neat, too. But the oversized earrings feel optional, since the dress and jacket are already making a bold Dramatic statement.

Why is Classic more Minimalist than Dramatic?

Both essences pull off minimalism. But Dramatic handles higher detail, including bolder prints and more complex silhouettes.

Dramatic makeup can also be a lot more embellished than Classic’s.

Plus, Dramatic is an essence of extremes. And since Dramatic beauty is so intense, Dramatics can be flattered by very little detail or a lot of it. We’ll discuss this more as we climb higher on the levels of detail.

Practical Takeaways

  • One way to express your beauty as a Dramatic is to let your silhouettes speak for themselves: choose clothing with little to no embellishment, and add few accessories.

    • This can create a gorgeously serious, stark, stern, powerful feel that perfectly aligns with your striking beauty.

  • Dramatics benefit from creating medium-contrast and especially high-contrast looks, to emphasize their outfits’ unique silhouettes and proportions.

  • Monochromatic style, especially in very dark shades, is another good option for achieving a minimalist look with visual interest:

Level 3: Effortless Natural Detail

Our second runner-up for Most Minimalist is Natural.

Natural Stats

  • Of all the essences, Naturals wear:

    • The most low-maintenance fashion, featuring slouchy, straight-ish silhouettes.

    • The lowest-detail makeup.

    • The most casual hair: straight-ish, with shaggy or carefree layers.

Natural Ingenue outfit.

Highly Natural fashion can appear harmonious and coherent with very little detail. I don’t get the sense that something is “missing” in this outfit, since the limited detail is an inherent match for this essence’s laidback feel.

Why is Dramatic more Minimalist than Natural?

Compared to Natural, Dramatic is flattered by more extreme minimalism.

Think ultra-sleek, straight, every-hair-in-place hair; monochromatic outfits with zero color contrast; a suit with completely angular, sharp-edged shapes.

This intense degree of minimalism can feel harsh for Natural.

Instead, Natural prefers a slight bend or tousle to the hair and a bit of slouchiness or casual detail in clothing, like wearing jeans with bagginess or distressing.

Textures like chunky knits, corduroy, or distressed leather also better express Natural’s down-to-earth feel than do completely smooth, zero-detail fabrics.

A textured linen Natural button-down enhances the casual feel of a Natural Classic look.

Practical Takeaways

  • Natural likes minimalism. But incorporating casual, simple details also helps produce a carefree aesthetic.

  • If you’re wearing several accessories, you may want to follow the timeless fashion advice of removing one accessory before leaving the house.

    • This guideline is entirely optional. But if you have lots of options for what to remove and can imagine Coco Chanel eyeing them pointedly, it’s possible you’ll want to edit.

  • You thrive in functional, practical accessories, like plain slouchy tote bags and wide-brimmed straw hats.

  • Alternately, you could wear a highly Natural outfit and add your other essences as statement accessories:

Dress up a highly Natural look with blingy Romantic rings and a round bun.

Leveling Up

Plot twist: I kind of want to give the remaining essences a 4-way tie for Most Detailed.

Gamine, Ingenue, Romantic, and Ethereal can all handle a very high amount of detail.

And it’s hard to say which one really deserves the top spot.

I’ve provided a potential ranking below. But I can certainly see people disagreeing with this order, and I’m not totally sure I agree with it myself.

Level 4: Dainty Ingenue Detail

Ingenue Stats

  • Ingenues wear:

    • Some of the most detailed hair of all the essences: many small, tight, defined ringlets that can be moderate and sometimes long in length.

    • Highly detailed silhouettes and fabrics: ruffles, tiers, puff sleeves, and lace with tiny, intricate shapes.

    • More understated makeup compared to many of the other essences, fitting with Ingenue’s demure, youthful beauty.

Practical Takeaways

  • Curvy Ingenue shapes feel inherently detailed, both in fashion and faces.

    • If you have a lot of Ingenue, you may get the sense that something is “missing” when you wear minimalist style.

  • The catch is that concepts like neatness and modesty are central to Ingenue’s vibe. So an Ingenue look won’t feel cluttered or overdone.

    • You still want a dainty and demure impression, rather than an ultra-elaborate or “dripping in jewels” feel.

  • High detail can flatter Ingenue when it’s coordinated and cohesive.

    • Often it works well to choose pieces that already have a lot of detail built into them, like a top with lace trim, tiny bows, or ruffles.

Ingenues are also extremely flattered by jewelry with tiny circular shapes.

Throw on a denim jacket if you’re a Natural Ingenue.

The ultimate Ingenue Dramatic look: dainty Ingenue necklace and blouse, plus edgy Dramatic leather gloves, skirt, and jacket.

Level 5: Creative Gamine Detail

Gamine Stats

  • Gamines wear:

    • Fashion with playful embellishment—buckles, buttons, piping, zippers, prints, and bold colors.

    • Some of the most colorful, creative, embellished makeup of all the essences.

    • Straight or straight-ish silhouettes, which generally feel simpler than fashion with draping, gathers, or curvy shapes.

    • Fashion that produces an overall busy, lively, and “detailed” feel.

Practical Takeaways

  • “Detailed” is a defining Gamine quality.

    • Gamines are generally best in a high, rather than low or even moderate, amount.

  • Layering short sleeve tops over long sleeve tops, and short skirts over tights, can be great options to create a busy Gamine look in cooler weather.

  • Your ideal detail is playful and daring, rather than serious or ultra-coordinated.

    • So you thrive when choosing colors, prints, or silhouettes that appear purposefully contrasting.

    • But you can also use repetition to enhance a playful feel, like color-blocking with blue and green in your outfit and jewelry:

Fun style for a Gamine with a bit of Classic!

Level 6: Intricate Ethereal Detail

Ethereal Stats

  • Ethereals wear:

    • Some of the most intricate hair and hairstyles of all the essences, featuring long waves and braiding.

    • Some of the most complex silhouettes and fabrics, featuring draping, asymmetry, shimmer, and swirling lace.

    • Lightweight yet embellished and unique makeup.

    • Highly intricate jewelry and accessories.

    • Overall complex fashion, which harmonizes with this essence’s inherently complex, wise, deep, mystical-appearing beauty.

Practical Takeaways

  • If you’re highly Ethereal, you shine in styling that exudes complexity.

    • You may have the sense that something is “missing” if you try minimalism.

  • But you’ll still want your individual details, and your overall impression, to feel relatively gentle and calm.

  • A good guideline for Ethereal is to choose one statement accessory (that still feels gentle rather than bold). Then, optionally add one or more accent accessories.

    • You can wear intricate jewelry that feels lightweight, like thin layered chain necklaces.

    • But you may want to avoid piling on a very high amount of jewelry, especially thick or weighty pieces (particularly if your clothing itself is already highly embellished, because of print, texture, silhouette, etc.).

This Ethereal Romantic foil print dress already feels inherently ornamented. Choosing a few shimmery Ethereal accessories adds to the dreamy, minutely-detailed feel.

You can also dress up a casual Natural Gamine look with shimmery Ethereal flats.

Level 7: Extravagant Romantic Detail

Romantic is my tentative choice for “Most Detailed.”

Romantic Stats

  • Romantics wear:

    • Some of the most elaborate, detailed-feeling hair and hairstyles of all of the essences, with full, brushed-out waves.

    • Arguably the most embellished makeup of all the essences, featuring notable color contrast, shiny or shimmery textures, and lots of eye emphasis—generous mascara, blended eyeliner, gradient eyeshadow, tightlining, etc.

    • Some of the most complex silhouettes and fabrics, including gathers, draping, ruching, peplums, and floral lace.

    • Arguably the most elaborate, glamorous jewelry and fashion of all the essences.

Practical Takeaways

  • More than maybe any other essence, Romantics can get a “something’s missing here” feeling in minimalist style.

  • Shiny jewelry with very curvy shapes (like gemstones, rhinestones, or other “bling”) is particularly good.

  • You can also handle a high amount of detail in essentially every aspect of your look.

  • Still, Romantic generally wants a cohesive feel. And sometimes an extremely high level of detail can appear cluttered or chaotic—not Romantic’s ideal.

  • So a rough guideline for adding detail in a Romantic way is:

    • Choose one statement accessory. Maybe this is curvy jewelry that’s in shiny, eye-catching colors, is rather large, or very intricate.

    • Then, if you add other accessories, just add one or two, and add them as accents—maybe they’re smaller, more neutral, less shiny. Maybe they even bring in your other essences.

    • And if that doesn’t feel exciting enough, then you can add more.

  • Your outfit itself and your hair also contribute to your overall level of detail. So if you already have a lot of Romantic in those areas, it’s possible you’ll want to add even less jewelry/accessories.

One way to do a high level of detail as a Romantic and still have it feel cohesive is to wear matching jewelry, like a statement beaded necklace, bracelet, and earrings.

Another option is to dress up a casual outfit with Romantic accessories.

Highly Natural outfit with Romantic Dramatic statement earrings.

Essence Blends?

Future posts may say more about level of detail for the blended types.

In general, matching your level of detail to your dominant essence, or to your highest percentage essences, can be a good place to start.

You can also experiment with modifying your level of detail to reflect your lower percentage essences.

For example, if you have 50% Ethereal, 30% Gamine, and 20% Classic, you’ll likely be able to do a high level of detail but might sometimes try a more moderate or even minimal amount.

Hidden Level

Finally, I mentioned that Dramatics can also handle a very high amount of detail…

Level 8: Dramatic??

Above I noted that even essences that prefer complex styling, like Ethereal and Romantic, generally don’t want an impression that appears cluttered or chaotic.

High detail is good. But a maximalist, as-high-as-possible amount is going to be harder to pull off.

Which essence does ultimately best pull off the most extreme level of detail?

It’s a matter of opinion, but I might say Dramatic. Dramatics have the kind of striking beauty that can push through even the most exaggerated high-fashion hair, makeup, and outfits.

So it might make sense that Dramatic tries to steal the Most Detailed crown from Romantic.

Dramatic is a good essence to have if you’re wearing a look with exaggerated silhouettes, complicated prints, statement jewelry, and lots of jewelry in general.

This look could suit a Dramatic Natural Gamine Ingenue.

Maybe Romantic and Dramatic can share the Most Detailed title. Maybe they’ll even share it with Ethereal, Gamine, and Ingenue, too.

What’s fascinating about the essences is that most of them prefer complex, ornamented styling.

Even Naturals, while they are fantastic in minimalism, tend to be quite flattered by adding in some carefree detail.

What about Classic? This essence decisively prefers simplicity. And that makes Classics an amazing illustration of the powerful beauty of minimalism, and of how different—even opposite—qualities can both be beautiful.
