Ingenue Essence Makeup

Are Ingenues the ultimate wearers of minimal, barely-there makeup and flirty date night makeup?

Let’s find out!

Ingenue Style Essence Makeup

Overall Vibe

Ingenues are flattered by makeup that mimics their extremely pretty and sweet beauty.

Your best makeup will feel:

  • Flirty—fluffy lashes, glossy lips, and pink blush form the perfect date night trio

  • Lightweight—think gentle shine and shimmer, and low to moderate contrast

  • Delicate—go for blended finishes and curving lines

Here’s some of your best specific makeup:

Eyes

Eyeshadow

Skippable.

Ingenues tend to have wide, round eyes.

So one way to keep the eyes feeling “open” is by applying zero makeup on the lids.

But you also have other great options:

Glowy eyeshadow all over the inner corners and lids (and optionally on the brow bone) is stunning for Ingenue.

The color shouldn’t feel intense; a safe choice can be an eyeshadow just a few shades lighter than your skin tone.

Or do light-colored shimmery shadow all over the lids:

You can optionally add a matte eyeshadow a few shades darker than your skin tone in the crease, on the brow bone, or at the outer eye corners.

You typically don’t want the colors to feel dark relative to your skin tone—Ingenue wants a lightweight effect.

Colors

Neutrals work well, feeling gentle and subtle.

But Ingenue likes youthful-feeling makeup, too.

So you can also choose one of the essence’s iconic hues, such as:

  • Very pale blue

  • Light purple

  • Or pink:

To avoid a graphic Gamine feel, choose a glowy finish.

Optionally, you can add matte, well-blended eyeshadow in the crease. Choose a color a couple shades darker than the eyeshadow on your lids.

Since Ingenue is defined by short shapes, you don’t need makeup that dramatically lengthens your features.

It’s fine to extend your eyeshadow a little beyond your outer eye corners. But you’ll want any added length to feel non-extreme.

Eyeliner

Also skippable, especially if you want an “open eye” look.

But liner also defines the lashes, which Ingenue likes.

The key is you want it to feel delicate, never harsh.

So go for thin lines.

If you add lower eyeliner, you’ll want to apply very lightly.

You might also select a color slightly lighter than your lashes (or mascara)—or even many shades lighter.

Blending your eyeliner can create a soft feel, too, even if you use a dark color.

Wings?

Maybe surprisingly—yes!

Winged liner easily feels youthful and flirty. It also adds extra curving detail—very Ingenue.

But your best wing will essentially be the opposite of a bold liquid line.

Ingenue’s best wings are short and subtle.

You can use eyeliner to draw the wing. Or use a small, stiff brush and an eyeshadow, to create an ultra-gentle effect.

Mascara

Ingenue loves mascara, since it adds curving, conventionally feminine detail.

Your best mascara will be lightweight, never heavy.

This preserves Ingenue’s warm, friendly feel.

Lightweight lower mascara works, too, emphasizing the eyes’ roundness.

Curling your lashes before applying mascara also helps “open” the eye.

Since Ingenue is defined by short shapes, you don’t need ultra-long lashes.

It’s ok if they’re naturally long—that can definitely suit Ingenue’s flirty feel.

But lashes with shocking, unnatural length aren’t ideal.

Falsies or Extensions

Very skippable—many versions will feel too thick or exaggerated for Ingenue.

Tightlining

Avoid dark tightlining—it competes with Ingenue’s wide-eyed beauty.

But light tightlining is mesmerizing:

You can tightline in a very light color, such as a few shades lighter than your real waterline.

This enhances the eyes’ curves.

Brows

Ingenues’ flattering brows tend to be:

  • Short

  • Gently curved or subtly arched

  • Feathery and delicate rather than dense

  • Thin or moderate rather than thick

  • Well-groomed

Ingenue brows also won’t tend to be low-set, since low brows easily feel intimidating or intense.

Light brows can express Ingenue gentleness. But dark brows work, too, especially if they appear natural in the context of your personal coloring:

Lips

Texture

Shiny—Ingenue loves soft finishes and avoiding heavy matte ones.

Opt for lip balm, lip gloss, or even a lightly-applied frosted lipstick.

Best Color

Ingenue’s iconic hue—pink!

A light-ish but not ultra-light version is especially flattering, such as baby pink or rose.

Extremely light pinks also work (though ultra-light versions sometimes feel intense and make the eyes stand out in a bold way. Plus, very light colors sometimes feel more neutral than pink.)

And medium pinks work well, too, as long as you select a balmy, glossy, or other shiny finish, so it still feels delicate:

Red could work if applied very lightly and used as a lip stain.

But bold, highly-pigmented red lips aren’t iconically Ingenue.

Lip Liner

Skippable.

Optionally, you can use it to make your lips appear more circular, such as lining just slightly outside your cupid’s bow and below the center of your bottom lip.

Try to blend the liner into the rest of your lip product, erasing any harsh lines.

Face

Blush

Amazing for Ingenue—adds softness, sweetness, and flirtiness.

You can apply a minimal or moderate amount all over your cheeks, in short, circular motions.

Alternately, you can concentrate blush high on your cheeks, starting just below the top of the cheekbones and ending notably above the hollows.

This vertically-short application suits Ingenue, because it’s consistent with the face’s compact structure.

And by emphasizing the face’s shortness, this blush style reads as youthful.

You can use a minimal or moderate amount of well-blended blush, either matte or with a shiny, creamy, or shimmery finish.

Very heavy blush isn’t advised, clashing with Ingenue’s lightweight feel.

Contour

Skippable.

Ingenue wants softness, and contour traditionally adds structure.

To emphasize and enhance the roundness of the cheeks, you could optionally blend a tiny bit of contour into their hollows.

You’d want to apply the product in relatively short, curving strokes.

Highlighter

Gorgeous for Ingenue:

You can highlight the very tops of the cheeks and other areas that naturally catch light, like the nose tip or chin.

As with Ingenue makeup in general, applying in short lines works best. So does blurring the edges for a diffuse finish.

Foundation

Best foundation?

Dewy.

With its high-shine finish, dewy foundation mimics the look of youthful, plump, hydrated skin.

But not everyone loves this effect, since it can sometimes exaggerate skin texture.

So you can also opt for a glowy or satin foundation—these still feel soft but without the “wet” look.

Or skip foundation and use tinted sunscreen instead. These often have dewy or otherwise shiny finishes. If you prefer minimal skin coverage, this might be your ideal choice.

Contrast Level

In makeup, “contrast level” can refer to:

  • How light and dark the colors in a makeup look are relative to one another

  • And how much your makeup colors stand out relative to your personal coloring.

Ingenue’s best contrast level tends to be low or medium.

This is simply because Ingenue makeup consists mostly of light and medium colors.

You might also add some dark colors in mascara and eyeliner.

But since Ingenue eye makeup is lightweight and applied in thin, short strokes, these dark colors generally won’t be prominent enough to create a highly contrasting look.

What if you’re naturally high-contrast?

If you naturally have high-contrast features, you might find that a low- or medium-contrast Ingenue look still suits you.

This is because if you apply mostly light makeup colors, your makeup might contrast notably with your own dark skin, hair, or eye color.

So it might still give you the level of contrast that your color season wants, while also feeling delicate enough for Ingenue.

Another option is to increase the contrast of your Ingenue makeup, such as doing a very light lip and exploring medium-dark eyeshadow in your creases.

And a final option is to match your contrast level to one of your other essences, especially if you also have some Dramatic, Romantic, or Gamine.

Color Season

Ingenue makeup can work amazingly for any season.

It’s true that some seasons are characterized by deep colors, and that Winters in particular are often advised to choose highly-pigmented cosmetics.

But every season has light and medium neutrals, plus pinks. And these shades comprise the core of Ingenue makeup.

If you have a warm season, some of your pinks may appear orange-y. But they’ll still look perfectly Ingenue on you if applied in Ingenue finishes.

That’s the overview of some of Ingenue’s best makeup!

Ingenue makeup is wonderful for its softness and conventional femininity, as well as its wearability and versatility.

It can easily take you from everyday life to date night.

Here’s extra detail:

Wearable Makeup

Of all the essences, Ingenues seem to get the most lightweight, delicate makeup.

And I think this simply reflects that of all the essences, Ingenues have the most gentle, delicate vibes.

It’s true that Ethereal can also have a very delicate vibe.

Fittingly, there’s notable overlap between Ingenue’s and Ethereal’s best makeup.

But where these essences diverge is that Ingenue feels more youthful, lighthearted, and down-to-earth.

In contrast, Ethereal feels more grown-up, serious, and unconventional.

So, compared to Ingenue, Ethereal can handle more unique and elaborate-feeling makeup.

And it’s true that Natural has a strong connection to minimalist beauty.

But previously, we uncovered the paradox that Naturals actually want a strong, sturdy makeup look, rather than one that feels delicate.

So, overall, it makes sense that the gentlest-feeling essence gets the gentlest makeup.

If you like wearable, lightweight, fresh-faced beauty, Ingenue is a fantastic essence to have.

And the good news is that if you prefer heavier or more elaborate looks, most people have more than one essence.

So you likely have at least another essence whose makeup you can explore.

Should You Match Your Makeup to Your Facial Features?

This often seems safest.

So if you’re a Dramatic Ingenue with fully Ingenue eyes, then the safest choice for creating harmonious makeup is do a fully Ingenue eye look.

But, sometimes it’s fun to apply makeup that suits your overall blend, even if it’s not technically the perfect fit for your individual features.

So if you’re a Dramatic Ingenue with Ingenue eyes, you still might want to explore adding at least a little Dramatic makeup to your eyes—or even doing a fully Dramatic eye!

It can be fun to see how you look when you emphasize an essence more than its naturally present in your face.

And you might still find the results harmonious, because you’re still doing makeup that connects to your general vibe.

Future posts may discuss this more in-depth.

How to Tell which of Your Features are Ingenue?

Ingenue features tend to appear youthful and curving.

Sometimes this means having small features. For instance, Ingenue’s often have short, delicate noses, chins, and overall bone structure. They can also have dainty, rather small-appearing eyes and lips.

The complication is that Ingenue’s facial features aren’t necessarily small—and can actually sometimes be large.

Many Ingenues appear to have quite wide, large eyes—a characteristic associated with youth.

Similarly, Ingenues frequently have high foreheads, which gives the face a cute, neotenous feel.

Ingenue features often lack horizontal elongation—for instance, the eyes, brows, lips, and nose typically don’t appear long in horizontal space.

However, there can always be exceptions to any general rule about the essences’ features.

And sometimes Ingenues do appear to have wide-appearing faces, thanks to short bone structure and round cheeks.

In general, it’s surprisingly hard to assign specific facial features to any essence, because there’s so much variation.

Different—even opposite!—features can embody the same essence, such as smaller and larger eyes, foreheads, and other features.

Are You an Ingenue?

To know if you have a lot of Ingenue, it probably’s easier to explore Ingenue fashion and hair, rather than makeup.

This is simply because Ingenue makeup is so lightweight and conventional, it won’t necessarily be obvious if it “clashes” with your features.

That’s kind of what Ingenue’s vibe is about—being sweet, soft, and pleasing, and not being clashing, argumentative, or disjointed.

However, if you are someone who feels that Ingenue makeup isn’t flattering on you, especially when worn in high amounts or as a full look, then that can be a good clue that you don’t have much of this essence.

Ingenue Makeup Inspiration?

For Ingenue makeup inspo, you could try searching for:

  • Clean girl makeup

  • No makeup makeup

  • Light glowy makeup

  • Soft romantic makeup [despite having the word “romantic” in it, this can still get you some good Ingenue options!]

These won’t always be fully Ingenue. But often they’ll have a strong connection to the essence’s lightweight beauty looks.

Popular Makeup?

It’s both easy and challenging to find examples of highly Ingenue makeup.

It’s easy in the sense that Ingenues have a strong connection to minimal makeup, which is very easy to find.

And makeup elements like light pink gloss and lightweight fluffy lashes are highly mainstream.

But in terms of the more dressed-up kinds of Ingenue makeup, like eyes that have generous light-colored shimmer and short, subtle wings, without any graphic elements—those can be much harder to find.

I think part of this is because when we think of “eye emphasis”, people often gravitate to bold textures and dark colors, like heavy liquid liner and smoky eyes.

And some essences really do look authentic in that sort of intense makeup.

But what’s gorgeous on Ingenues is gentle, subtle eye emphasis.

And it’s not always easy to find examples of eye looks that emphasize the eyes using lightweight makeup.

Color Connection?

Thinking about Ingenue’s best makeup also brings up some fascinating connections to all the essences’ best colors.

Specifically, it seems that “opposite” essences have “opposite” best colors:

  • Elongated, curving Ethereal’s best color is purple; short, straight Gamine’s best color is yellow (and these colors are opposite on the color wheel)

    • Ethereal also tends to have a peaceful yet subtly intense, serious, deeply thoughtful vibe, whereas Gamine’s vibe is in many ways the opposite—playful, witty, not-so-serious

  • The ultra-glamorous, luxurious Romantic essence’s best color is deep pink or red, whereas the casual, carefree Natural essence’s best color is green (which is opposite to red/pink on the color wheel)

    • Natural and Romantic also in some ways have opposite feature shapes, with Natural often being defined by notable horizontal width, such as in wide bone structure, and Romantic being defined by notable vertical extension of key features like the eyes and lips (e.g., Romantics tend to have greater vertical height of these features than other essences)

  • And fascinatingly, the balanced Classic essence, which doesn’t really have an “opposite” essence, has blue as its favorite color—and none of the essences have orange (blue’s opposite) as their favorite color!

I didn’t plan or purposefully orchestrate those patterns in any way. I simply observed which colors appeared most harmonious for the essences’ best fashion. And we ended up with some intriguing connections.

But what about Ingenue and Dramatic?

These are “opposite” essences—Ingenue is short, curved, and has the gentlest, sweetest vibe of all the essences.

Dramatic is long (though sometimes appears short in fashion, too) and sharp and has the most intense, intimidating vibe of all the essences.

And yet at first glance, their best colors really aren’t that different.

Ingenue prefers pink; Dramatic prefers red. These colors come from the same family.

But the difference comes from the depth of color, with Ingenue’s very best hue being a rather light pink, and Dramatic’s very best color being a rather dark red.

So for these two essences, they do in some ways prefer “opposite” colors.

But instead of being literally opposite in hue (e.g., in literal color, like blue and orange), we see an opposition of depth.

And this makes sense, since in fashion, it’s easier for light colors to read as gentle and soft—very Ingenue—and for deep colors to read as intense and powerful—very Dramatic.

This also helps to explain why Ingenue wants such a lightweight, delicate makeup look—the opposite of Dramatic’s bold, intense one.

A final thought is that just because some essences can be said to be “opposites” doesn’t mean that it’s bad to have high amounts of “opposite” essences in your face.

Many gorgeous celebrities simultaneously have high amounts of Ethereal and Gamine; or Romantic and Natural; or Dramatic and Ingenue.

There are also connections that we can see between these dichotomous pairs, despite their differences.

Ethereal and Gamine can both have a strong connection to “whimsical” fashion and beauty.

This reflects that Ethereal feels magical and Gamine feels playful, and “whimsical” can function as an intersection of those concepts.

And Romantic and Natural can both have a strong connection to worldly, welcoming vibes, feeling sensual in different ways—with Romantic, it’s an elaborate, glam sensuality, and with Natural it’s an earthy, raw sensuality.

Romantic and Natural can also both sometimes (though not always) appear moderate in length in faces, since Romantic is defined more by full curves that vertical or horizontal elongation, and since Natural’s width can sometimes make the face appear shorter vertically, even if it actually has some elongation (this is simply because wide shapes tend to appear shorter than narrower ones).

And Dramatic and Ingenue both tend to appear neat and well-groomed, even to the extent of having a royal feel—Dramatic feels like the ruler, Ingenue like the princess.

Fashion that blends these “opposite” pairs is also amazing, especially because juxtaposing opposite elements is something that often creates mesmerizing, novel, aesthetically-pleasing art, in fashion, makeup, and other domains.

So pairing boxy crop tops with long flowy skirts (Gamine Ethereal), and dressy glam going-out tops with relaxed-fit jeans (Romantic Natural) and leather jackets with fit-n-flare dresses (Dramatic Ingenue) can be some of the most fun aesthetics to style.
